'Just take it as it comes. Hold your ground and take it as it comes. There's no other way''. This quotation from Everyman's main character himself gives a good insight into the theme of this novel. It deals with the limitation of life which at some point becomes real for everyone, and a man's attempt to escape this reality. The book describes the hard truth that there is no turning back, once you have realized your mistakes, you will have to live with the consequences. For most of his life though, the main character does not accept what he advices his daughter in the previous quote, namely that there is no way around reality. At some point of his life, his only aim is to escape death. Before that, however, he tries to elude growing older, hence starting a race against time, although he knows, he can never win. As Robert Kastenbaum explains, '[a]nxiety - all anxiety - is rooted in the awareness of our mortality. The consequences are enormous, and reveal themselves in virtually every aspect of individual and cultural life'. The protagonist is caught up in a frantic fear of aging which is at the same time connected to a fear of loss. Therefore, he does not immediately realize the damage he has caused to others and to himself. This leads to the thesis that in Philip Roth's novel Everyman, the main character's destructive behavior towards relationships, mirrors his desperate attempt to cope with his own aging process. The first chapter of this analysis will reveal the origin of the main character's fear of aging by examining the reasons and the development of his anxiety. After that chapter two will discuss these findings in relation to the protagonist's way of living and his dealing with his own aging process. In the last section the consequences of his behavior will be worked out. Furthermore, the reasons for his increasing loneliness as he grows older and his lonely death will be analyzed.

At the same time there is a profound feeling of not being able to fully understand what this existence is about. By analyzing two of her short stories, 'The Mark on the Wall' and 'An Unwritten Novel', I will examine Woolf's method of showing the contrast between what we think reality to be and what reality actually is. Therefore, I argue that in her short stories Virginia Woolf demonstrates how we construct realities and meanings for ourselves through creating narratives and how easily these narratives are exposed as fragile and unstable.In the first part of my analysis, I will examine how she uses these narratives to show how we make up realities for ourselves in order to make sense of the outside world. Then, I will continue with analyzing who these constructed realities come from and how she criticizes society through this. Lastly, it will be looked at the fragility of these constructed realities and how Woolf shows that what we think we know and what something really is, are not necessarily the same. She illustrates how incomplete and vague our assumptions and perceptions can be whenever we think we have fully understood something and offers different views on knowledge and reality at the ends of her stories.

Through instant messaging and other platforms it has become possible to have written conversations with another person. Therefore, the Internet has become an important part of communication and over time different ways of communicating and expressing oneself on the Internet have developed. This has different reasons and meanings. To understand this, various aspects have to be taken into account. In this paper, I will focus on the social factors of the question what Internet language is and how it developed and continues to develop.First of all, I will examine to what extent Internet language is jargon or slang and the reasons for this. In order to do that it first has to be looked at what the differences between the two types of language usages are and special attention has to be paid to who uses these varieties and how they are used by these people. It also has to be looked at where on the Internet these forms are used and what the meanings of the use of such a language are to determine what Internet language actually is.In the second part of this paper, I will continue to discuss my findings of the first part in terms of the social aspects of Internet language and its meaning for the construction of identities and judgment of others. Therefore, my paper will focus on the question of what social identity (or construction of identity and identification with a certain social and age group) has to do with different language usage among different groups of Internet users. I will argue that language use on the Internet functions as a method of social identification with and among certain user-groups and differentiation from other groups.

To this day its meaning and value are a vital part of American culture, but since it is such a powerful and influential concept, it is also the object of manifold interpretations, which at times turn out to be opposing. In my paper, I will compare the different ideas on the American Dream in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and Emma Lazarus's poem 'The New Colossus'. While Fitzgerald presents a rather negative view of the American Dream, leaving us with the notion that although we know that we must eventually fail in trying to achieve our goals, we still keep on trying. Lazarus on the other hand presents the reader with the positive side of the American Dream and New York when she says that everyone is welcome, no matter what their background is, everyone has a chance to achieve a better life in the city. This shows that in a way New York was a symbol for the American Dream, because for many the city stood for a better life and the possibility to achieve your dreams during the time when these two works were written. Lazarus includes everyone in her poem, whereas Fitzgerald leaves out real success stories and different races are portrayed negatively. Therefore, it can be said that although both might present parts of the 'reality' of the American Dream and its impact on society, they still offer very narrow and incomplete images of it, since both of them stay focused on specific (also subjective) views of this myth and the city of New York. In order to show this, I will first analyze The Great Gatsby and the idea of the American Dream Fitzgerald presents in it. Then I will describe Emma Lazarus's role in the shaping of the American Dream and how her words also partially oppose reality. I will then continue to analyze the ambiguity of the American Dream and New York as a city of dreams, fascination and new beginnings, but also of failure and lost hopes as it is presented in The Great Gatsby and in Lazarus's poem.
