Small folio (193 x 287 mm). Ottoman Turkish collective manuscript on polished laid paper. 220 leaves, comprising four parts. 25 lines of black and occasional red Naskhi by several hands, within red rules, but first two pages within double gilt rules and with a pretty gilt scrollwork 'unwan at the begining. Early full Western calfskin binding, spine and covers stamped in gilt. A compilation of four texts, in different hands, from the end of the 17th or 18th century, containing chronologies as well as astronomical concordances. The contents are, individually: - 1. The "Taqwim al-tawarikh", an annalistic chronicle from the creation of Man to the year 1648, when it was composed by the famous Turkish polymath Katib Chelebi (1609-57). This work was first printed in the original mixture of Persian and Ottoman Turkish by Müteferrika in 1733. "[T]he work originated as an excerpt of [Chelebi's previous effort,] 'Fazlakat aqwal al-ahyar', but continued up to Chelebi's own time [.] Becoming highly popular as an easy reference work, it was continued after Chelebi's death by several authors, including Hüseyin Hezarfenn" (Kafadar, Karateke, Fleischer: Historians of the Ottoman Emprire). - 2. "Nukhbat al-tawarikh wa al-akhbar" (Chronological Tables of Muslim Dynasties) by Mehmed bin Menera Edirnevi (Muhammad Efendi, d. ca. 1640). The family tree that is here developed begins with Adam and ends with Sultan 'Uthman II (ruled 1618-22). - 3. The chronological tables of Hezarfenn Husayn Efendi (d. 1691/92), enumerating the rulers of Persia, Ottoman Sultans, and Emperors of Byzantium up to the conquest of Crete in 1669. Dated 1201 AH (1786 CE) at the end. - 4. A compilation of astronomical concordances. - A few edge and corner flaws, but generally well preserved. A 20th century note in French, loosely inserted at the beginning of the manuscript, identifies the four texts individually. - Provenance: 20th century Parisian private collection, kept in the family for several generations and dispersed in 2022.

Small folio (185 x 246 mm). (7), 75, (2) ff. With 2 (instead of 4) double-page-sized engraved maps and a double-page-sized compass rose plate, all in contemporary hand colour. Early 20th century half calf over marbled covers with title gilt to spine. The first illustrated printed Turkish book and the second work from the press of Ibrahim Müteferrika. Composed in 1656, this is a compilation containing in its main section a history of the Ottoman navy and naval wars, from the conquest of Constantinople down to the author's own lifetime. It includes an introductory geographical summary of the conditions around the Balkans and the Black Sea, a chronological list of all Ottoman admirals, a description of the administrative organisation of the navy and dockyards, regulations on sea battles, ships in the Ottoman navy, their equipment and maintenance, together with suggestions for improvement. - The maps show the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea (some edge flaws; rebacked; lacks the map of the Black Sea and the world map). Some browning and waterstaining throughout; ff. 17-18 transposed between ff. 4 and 5, ff. 25-28 between ff. 22 and 23. - Provenance: 20th century Parisian private collection, kept in the family for several generations and dispersed in 2022. - Watson 2. Original watercolour drawing over ink. 267 x 196 mm. On thick oriental wove paper. Original ink drawing of the armillary sphere (Zâtü'l-Kürsü, "instrument on pedestal") published in 1732 in the famous universal Islamic geography "Kitab-i Cihânnümâ" of Katib Chelebi (1609-57). The present watercolour by Ahmed Al-Qirimi, who also contributed the maps to Ibrahim Müteferrika's famous publication of Katip's atlas, probably served as the direct model for the engraved plate. Müteferrika, a Hungarian convert to Islam, completed Katip's unfinished work, which had hitherto circulated in manuscripts only. He had the maps specially drawn and cut for it, and printed it at his own press, the first printshop in Turkey. - While extremely close in design and size to the present drawing, the published plate differs from it in several respects, lacking numerous details as well as - most conspicuously - the four additional instruments which here decorate the corners; on the other hand, the print shows the pedestal placed upon an additional short plinth not seen in the sketch. - Evenly browned and with a few small edge flaws, but well preserved.
