A few scuffs and minor gouges to boards, front board beginning to separate but secured by cords, rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, which are bumped, spine gatored and darkened, rear joint cracked, hinges starting. This is a translation, with notes, of the twelfth edition of a standard German work, which was first published in 1813 with the title Lehrbuch der Institutionen des Heutigen Romischen Privatrechts. Well-received in the United States, Kaufmann's translation was on the Harvard Law school reading list, and those of other leading law schools. The first American edition was published in 1845. It was intended to be a two-volume work, but its second volume was never published. Instead, the first edition was superseded by the second edition. Both editions are scarce.
