"A great baseball personality and a great baseball book." - Ted Williams. "One of the most entertaining baseball memoirs ever published. Poignant and personal, homespun and humorous, filled with recollections and reflections ." - from the rear outer jacket. "People like Elden Auker are a great resource. His recollections of the baseball he experienced and the great players he knew are fascinating, funny, and often revealing. Elden Auker just notched career victory No. 131. This book's a winner!" - Bob Costas, NBC Sports. "As a rule, nothing is more boring than listening to someone talk about himself when I want to talk about myself. Elden Auker is a rare exception to that rule. I have listened to him talk about life and baseball in the 1930s deep into the night. He's every bit as fascinating in print as he is in person. Elden Auker is a great American and this is a great book." - Tommy Lasorda. "Ten years from now, when we're sitting around discussing the best baseball books of the decade, Sleeper Cars and Flannel Uniforms will come up early and often in the conversation. A fascinating read from start to finish, this book will remain timely until the end of time." - Bob Nightengale, USA Today Baseball Weekly. "SCENE: A Detroit hotel room, 1929. The Yankees are in town to play the Tigers, and Babe Ruth, discovering that his roommate has been stealing from him, begins to beat the man unmercifully until eventually restrained. In Sleeper Cars and Flannel Uniforms, Elden Auker not only describes this incident, but also reveals the identity of that Hall of Fame roommate as he shares this and many other fascinating stories from a baseball era that never grows old. The Babe, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Hank Greenberg, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Dizzy Dean, Lefty Grove, Charlie Gehringer, Leo Durocher, Joe Cronin. We know them all from their plaques in the Hall of Fame. Now, thanks to Auker, we can also know them in uniform and off the field, in the glory of their triumphs and the torment of their tragedies. Auker is able to humanize these men and many others because he knew them before they were legends. He played baseball, cards, and golf with and against them. He saw them make the transition from baseball to the working world with varying degrees of success and failure. Auker was a submarine-style pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, the Boston Red Sox, and the St. Louis Browns from 1933 to 1942. Although he turned 90 on September 21, 2000, his stories are as fresh as this morning's doughnuts, as timeless as the subjects themselves. Auker, among the last links to the days when ballclubs traveled in Pullman cars and wore baggy uniforms woven from wool, is a modern man who has kept up with the times, rather than bemoan bygone days. His candid and poignant reflections are unburdened by bitterness. A success in the bonded abrasives business from which he has retired, Auker also shares entertaining stories about the times he spent with American luminaries such as Joe Kennedy and Joe Louis, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, Henry Ford and Tommy Lasorda." - from the inner front jacket flap.
