Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The earliest of these poems reflect time spent in Barcelona where Patrick Kehoe taught English. Indeed many of the poems in this collection conjure the life of a young man abroad in that city, five years or so after the death of General Franco. Later poems pay moving tribute to his late parents and the people of his native city, Enniscorthy, as well as revisiting Barcelona. Other poems evoke in sensuous, luxuriant meditations the shimmering essence of a Corfu summer.A thoughtful and assured debut collection.City, Like HandsYou looked for Spanish cigarettesTo feel you had arrived. The streetsStretched away in an untapped web, Bronze light as though everything was free. City, like hands, washed by the MediterraneanPleading gold benediction through a winter; Spring became summer, trains rollingPunch drunk with day-trippers. Snail-paced by calmIn the cypress grove of Montjuic: Its words you want, to hold you in their handsAnd take the bare look off intimacy.Patrick Kehoe was born in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, Ireland in 1956. His first poems were published by the late James Liddy in broadsheets and issues of The Gorey Detail. Early poems were also published in the Irish Press. In recent times his work has appeared in Natural Bridge, Cyphers and The Scaldy Detail. Formerly a teacher, he has been working as a journalist in Dublin for the past 23 years. He is also a guitarist and songwriter. This is his debut collection. Poems reflecting on Barcelona five or so years after the death of Franco, the people of Enniscorthy Ireland, and the shimmering essence of a Corfu summer. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Patrick Kehoe taught English classes in Barcelona for two years between 1978 and 1980. The poems gathered here re-assemble that vibrant metropolis as a parallel city of the imagination. There are visits to other Spanish cities, a memory of a brief walk through Murcia some forty years ago, and more recent poems deriving from stays in Madrid, La Coruna and Bilbao.Kehoes short lyrics are redolent of hopeful motorways, of entries and exits, of crossings and re-crossings. They sing of the exhalations and exhaustions of the streets and of the vast cities of Spain. Ultimately, the Barcelona of the late seventies an untramelled, bold- spirited place, that knew few tourists between October and May continues to inform the work of the poet. And where to then, in the fired catapult, Where the bed that nightfallUnder the drowse of stars? The poems gathered here re-assemble late 1970s Barcelona as a parallel city of the imagination, with visits to other Spanish cities inspired by the poet's more recent visits.
