Rather than focusing on the change of the youth, in the latter story type the youth character is exposed to a confrontation with the adult world. In Oates's story this confrontation consists of the fact that the youth world (Connie) is getting overpowered by the adult world (Arnold Friend).At the beginning of the story, in the title, the reader is confronted with a twofold question pointing in two directions. 'The very title of the story calls attention to duality: a future (where are you going) and a past (where have you been).' Therefore, in this term paper the following thesis will be examined: 'The concept of duality is a basic feature of the 'coming-of-age' story.' It will be shown that in Oates's 'Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been ' one distinctive feature of creating the story type of the 'coming-of-age' story is the concept of duality. While following the twofold pattern of analyzing the representation of the youth world and the adult world, further major techniques of creating duality in Oates's story will be discovered, such as irony, ambiguity, grotesque, parody, allusions, deception, and allegory.

According to Comrie, 'aspect' can be defined as follows: 'As the general definition of aspect, we may take the formulation that 'aspects are different ways of viewing the internal temporal constituency of a situation'.' In contrast to 'tense', which is a deictic category, 'aspect is not concerned with relating the time of the situation to any other time-point [.] ' WordNet, a lexical database for the English language, defines 'phylogenesis' as follows: 'Phylogenesis: ((biology) the sequence of events involved in the evolutionary development of a species or taxonomic group of organisms)' Therefore, in connection with linguistic purposes and 'aspect' the term 'phylogenesis', usually used in biological and evolutionary terminology, can be understood as the diachronic development of the grammatical category of aspect from Old English (OE) to Modern English (ModE).

Furthermore, I want to demonstrate how personal, individual guiltand responsibility not only become a matter for the individual but alsohave an important impact on the community and the society. According toMiller, there is a really strong mutual relationship between the individualand society. He states: 'Society is inside man and man is inside society,the water is in the fish, the fish is in the water.' Miller's main protagonistsalways try to defend themselves against an accusation, to deny theirresponsibility and guilt, and to believe in their innocence. Bigsby mentionswhat all of the characters concerning innocence and guilt have incommon: '. [They] spend much of their time rebutting charges whosejustice they acknowledge even as they are rejected. They are people whotry to escape the consequences of their actions, who try to declare theirinnocence even when that involves implying the guilt of others.' This trulyapplies for the plays and characters I will observe in the following. Idecided to focus on two plays published in the 1940s and 1950s: All MySons (1947) and The Crucible (1953). Their main protagonists experienceconfrontation with themselves which finally leads to death. Most emphasiswill be laid on All My Sons as there we have a number of charactersdealing with guilt and responsibility, namely Chris, Larry, Kate, and JoeKeller. In addition, I will discuss the character of Proctor in The Crucible.The dominant question in these characters becomes this one: 'Howcan a human being work out the interconnections among the everwideningcircles of responsibility: self, family, society, the universe According to Miller, 'to violate the codes of any circle is to sin.'.

Heroides-Brief geht es, kurz gesagt, um die von Jason verlassene Medea, nachdem sie ihm mit ihren Zauberkräften zur Erlangung des Goldenen Vlieses geholfen hat. Obwohl Jason in Creusa bereits eine neue Liebschaft gefunden hat, fordert Medea Jason zurück und sinnt auf Rache. Ovid beschreibt Medea in diesem Brief als leidenschaftlich Liebende auf der einen Seite, auf der anderen Seite als drohende Rächerin. Autoren wie Velleius Paterculus, Cicero, Quintilian, Seneca d. Ä.,Seneca d. J., Petron, Persius, Iuvenal und Ps.-Longinus haben sich bereitseingehend mit theoretischen Abhandlungen über die Rhetorik befasst. In derhier im Mittelpunkt stehenden zweiten Messallarede (dial. 28,1-35,5) versuchtMessalla, die Gründe und Ursachen für den Niedergang der Beredsamkeit zuerforschen. Nach Williams gab es drei Erklärungsansätze für den Verfall: 'Therewas the explanation in terms of morals; there was the explanation in terms ofpolitical change; and there was the explanation that posited a fundamental lawof growth followed by inevitable decline.' Messalla widmet sich in seiner Rededem moralisch-pädagogischen Erklärungsversuch, der an manchen Stelleneine gewisse thematische Nähe zu den beiden Schriften De causis corruptaeeloquentiae und der Institutio oratoria von Quintilian zugeschrieben werdenkann.Zunächst soll auf den Aufbau des Gesamtdialogs mit der Vorstellung undStellung der teilnehmenden Personen innerhalb des Dialogs eingegangenwerden, und vor allem Messallas zweite Rede in den Gesamtkontexteingeordnet werden. Doch erst mit Erscheinen der Ethica Nicomachea von Aristoteles liegt uns in der Form des achten und neunten Buches die zu diesem Zeitpunkt einzigartige und erste wissenschaftlich-systematische Auseinandersetzung mit der Freundschaftsthematik vor. Die von Aristoteles entworfene Freundschaftstheorie, deren Basis die Empirie von Freundschaft bildet, zeigt nicht nur Grundlagen und Gründe einer an humanen Maßstäben orientierten Freundschaft auf, sondern hat eine bis dato nicht vorhandene umfassende und detaillierte Klassifikation der Freundschaft zum Inhalt. Des Weiteren widmet sich Aristoteles schließlich der ganz spezifisch verstandenen Freundschaft unter den philosophischen Weisen und der damit verbundenen Frage nach der Vereinbarkeit von der Autarkie des Weisen und der Notwendigkeit, Freundschaften einzugehen. Dieser Topos wird Grundlage für viele nachfolgende Autoren sein, die sich mit dem Entwurf einer Freundschaftstheorie befassen oder das Thema Freundschaft zum Inhalt ihrer Schriften machen.Im Rahmen der hier vorliegenden wissenschaftlichen Arbeit im Fach Latein wurden nun die beiden römischen Autoren Cicero und Seneca ausgesucht, um das Philosophem der Freundschaft in ausgewählten Werken einer genauen Untersuchung zu unterziehen. Als Textgrundlage für die Herausarbeitung des ciceronischen Freundschaftsbegriffes wird das dritte Buch von De finibus bonorum et malorum herangezogen, in dem Cato in fin. III, 62-76 an prägnanter Stelle die stoische Gesellschafts- und Sozialtheorie vorstellt und in diesem Zuge den stoischen Freundschaftsbegriff einführt. Von einer Auseinandersetzung mit der Freundschaftsthematik.

'The very title of the story calls attention to duality: a future (where are you going) and a past (where have you been).' Therefore, in this term paper the following thesis will be examined: 'The concept of duality is a basic feature of the 'coming-of-age' story.' It will be shown that in Oates's 'Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been ' one distinctive feature of creating the story type of the 'coming-of-age' story is the concept of duality. While following the twofold pattern of analyzing the representation of the youth world and the adult world, further major techniques of creating duality in Oates's story will be discovered, such as irony, ambiguity, grotesque, parody, allusions, deception, and allegory. 20 pp. Englisch.

According toMiller, there is a really strong mutual relationship between the individualand society. He states: 'Society is inside man and man is inside society,the water is in the fish, the fish is in the water.' Miller's main protagonistsalways try to defend themselves against an accusation, to deny theirresponsibility and guilt, and to believe in their innocence. Bigsby mentionswhat all of the characters concerning innocence and guilt have incommon: '. [They] spend much of their time rebutting charges whosejustice they acknowledge even as they are rejected. They are people whotry to escape the consequences of their actions, who try to declare theirinnocence even when that involves implying the guilt of others.' This trulyapplies for the plays and characters I will observe in the following. Idecided to focus on two plays published in the 1940s and 1950s: All MySons (1947) and The Crucible (1953). Their main protagonists experienceconfrontation with themselves which finally leads to death. Most emphasiswill be laid on All My Sons as there we have a number of charactersdealing with guilt and responsibility, namely Chris, Larry, Kate, and JoeKeller.
