Soft cover. Condizione: Good. John C. Kendrew, "The Three-dimensional Structure of a Protein [myoglobin] Molecule" in "Scientific American", December 1961, vol 205 no. 6; the Kendrew on pp 96-110 in the full issue of 196pp. Original wrappers. GOOD copy (5/10) onlythere is some roughness to the spine (see pic) which takes away from the issue. The text is clean and bright. [++] "Kendrew, working on the smaller myoglobin molecule, was the first to take full advantage of the new method. In 1958, he presented the first model ever of a globular protein derived by direct structure determination. The model showed the general outline of the molecule; a second model at atomic resolution followed two years later." Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography online [++] Seems to me that this paper in Scientific Americanintended for a "general" audience (though even from this platform there were 240 citations) even though the article itself is pretty complex, more like a paper in Nature in today's standards more so than SAaddresses the two earlier landmark papers by Kendrew ("A Three-Dimensional Model of the Myoglobin Molecule Obtained by X-Ray Analysis", 1958, which was the first three-dimensional structure of a protein and "Structure of Myoglobin: A Three-Dimensional Fourier Synthesis at 2 Å Resolution" 1960). Kendrew shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Max Perutz, for their work investigating the structure of haem-containing proteins. [++] I should note that the famous (or should-be-famous) painting of a three-dimensional model of the myoglobin molecule by Irving Gels is shown in a full-page color illustration, along with a full-scale index model on the following page.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Pp. 103-25. Original wrappers. Very Good. First Edition. SIGNED BY JOHN KENDREW (on front wrapper, dated 1977). Offprint of John Kendrew's Nobel Lecture, December 11, 1962. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1962 was awarded jointly to Max Ferdinand Perutz and John Cowdery Kendrew "for their studies of the structures of globular proteins." "When X-rays pass through a crystalline structure, the patterns formed can be captured as photographic images, which are then used to determine the crystal's structure. During the 1930s, this method was used to map increasingly large and complex molecules. In 1957, John Kendrew became the first person to successfully determine the atomic structure of a protein. He had unlocked the structure of myoglobin, an oxygen-storing protein found in muscle cells" (Nobel prize website). Signed by Author(s).

"Haemoglobin; a Symposium Based on a Conference Held at Cambridge in June 1948 in Memory of Sir Joseph Barcroft" presents a comprehensive exploration of hemoglobin, the vital protein responsible for oxygen transport in the blood. Compiled from the proceedings of a conference held in Cambridge, this volume features contributions from leading scientists and researchers of the era. The book delves into the biochemical properties, physiological functions, and clinical significance of hemoglobin. It offers insights into the structure and behavior of hemoglobin under various conditions. This symposium serves as a historical record of the state of knowledge on hemoglobin at a pivotal time in the development of modern biochemistry and molecular biology, honoring the legacy of Sir Joseph Barcroft's pioneering work in respiratory physiology. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
