Narrative of Harold Studley Gray's career as a C.O. during WWI, told through his letters from prison. Gray worked as a YMCA volunteer in British prison camps at the beginning of the war, then refused to accept conscription upon his return to America in 1919, claiming it would "mar his relation to God." Gray was reputedly one of only two C.O.'s to be threatened with the death sentence for refusal to serve in the Great War, though he eventually was released from service with a dishonorable discharge.
