SRI has already been around for quite some time before the crisis, but this industry has never seen such a volume increase as in the last 4 years. The EU market for SRI almost doubled since 2007 (Cropper, 2010). This clearly shows that the events forcing the financial crisis motivated investors to rethink their criteria for making their investment decisions. Naturally, such a high growth rate of an industry comes from an increasing demand. In order to satisfy the increasing demand for SRI products the SRI industry is going threw a 'transformative' and 'innovative' phase exploring new areas for SRI, creating new products and services. However, SRI investment has a very broad definition band and cannot be boxed in easily. Hence, as good as it might be, SRI investment brings also many challenges with it, because it is such a broad concept.Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to give an overview about what SRI is and to find answers to the question of 'How sustainable SRI is 'In the first chapter the paper will discuss the different definitions and motivations for SRI investments. The second chapter will take a closer look on the history of the SRI market and the different categories and approaches to create an SRI portfolio. Further it will present the available product categories of the SRI market. The third chapter will analyse the development of the SRI market in Europe and the US. In the fourth chapter the performance of socially responsible investment will be analyzed. Finally the fifth chapter will discuss the main constraints of SRI.

Die Weltrangliste der führenden Wirtschaftsmächte wird seit daher von den führenden Ländern der Ersten Welt angeführt. Doch zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts erschienen neue Akteure am Horizont: Die BRIC-Staaten Brasilien, Russland, Indien, China haben das Potenzial, um in den nächsten 50 Jahren für tief greifende Umwälzungen zu sorgen. Laut der BRIC-Theorie von Goldman Sachs könnten diese vier Länder bis zum Jahre 2050 die westlichen Industrienationen der G7 in punkto Wirtschaftskraft überholt haben. Die Finanzbeziehungen und Investitionsflüsse werden sich in den nächsten 50 Jahren in Richtung aufstrebende Schwellenländer verschieben. Länder wie Brasilien haben zwar viele Ressourcen, diese sind jedoch nicht unerschöpfbar. Hohe und steigende Wachstumszahlen geben keinen Einblick in den Wohlstand einer Nation. Das Pro-Kopf-Einkommen ist die beste Möglichkeit, Vergleiche der internationalen Entwicklung quantitativ darzustellen, jedoch ist es kein vollständiger Indikator. Um die Wohlfahrt der Bevölkerung darzustellen, benötigt es qualitative Indikatoren wie beispielsweise Umweltkennzahlen und Maßstäbe für die Einkommensverteilung. Wachstum ist nur dann entwicklungsfördernd, wenn es sozialverträglich, umweltverträglich und arbeitsintensiv ist. Das heißt: Entwicklung und Wachstum sollten nicht auf destruktiven Grundlagen entstehen, sondern vielmehr auf der fairen Verteilung der erwirtschafteten Produkte und der Integration der Bevölkerung in den Produktionsprozess, um so die Entwicklung auch nachhaltig zu gestalten. In vorliegender Arbeit soll analysiert werden, ob Brasilien ein aufstrebendes Schwellenland ist. Dazu werden zuerst die nötigen qualitativen und quantitativen Faktoren angeführt und beschrieben, die für ein langfristiges entwicklungsförderndes Wachstum nötig sind. Anhand dieser Faktoren wird Brasilien im praktischen Teil statisch analysiert. Das heißt: Entwicklung und Wachstum sollten nicht auf destruktiven Grundlagen entstehen, sondern vielmehr auf der fairen Verteilung der erwirtschafteten Produkte und der Integration der Bevölkerung in den Produktionsprozess, um so die Entwicklung auch nachhaltig zu gestalten. In vorliegender Arbeit soll analysiert werden, ob Brasilien ein aufstrebendes Schwellenland ist. Dazu werden zuerst die nötigen qualitativen und quantitativen Faktoren angeführt und beschrieben, die für ein langfristiges entwicklungsförderndes Wachstum nötig sind. Anhand dieser Faktoren wird Brasilien im praktischen Teil statisch analysiert. Aus der Analyse soll hervorgehen, wie die momentanen Voraussetzungen für ein erfolgreiches und nachhaltiges Wachstum in Brasilien sind.
