Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Singapore's Constitution was hastily cobbled together after her secession from the Federation of Malaysia in 1965. In the subsequent 50 years, the Constitution has been amended many times to evolve a Constitution like no other in the world. Outwardly, Singapore has a Westminster-type constitutional democracy, with an elected legislature, fundamental liberties and safeguards to ensure the independence of the judiciary. On closer inspection, the Constitution displays many innovative and unusual characteristics. Most notable among them are the various types of Members of Parliament that have been introduced since the mid-1980s, the office of the Elected President and the fact that there is no constitutional right to property. This volume seeks to explain the nature and context of these constitutional innovations in the context of a pluralistic, multi-ethnic state obsessed with public order and security. The volatile racial mix of Singapore, with its majority Chinese population nestled in a largely Malay/Islamic world, compels the state to search for ethnic management solutions through the Constitution to guarantee to the Malays and other ethnic minorities their status in the polity. In addition, it examines how the concept of the rule of law is perceived by the strong centrist state governed by a political party that has been in power since 1959 and continues to hold almost hegemonic power.

Kent Ridge, a corner of Singapore island, has been home to the National University of Singapore (NUS) since the 1980s, but the area entered the historical record centuries earlier. From the white sands of its shoreline marked on navigators? maps, to the Alexandra Barracks of the Singapore Mutiny, from tiger traps and plantations to kampong and rich men?s seaside bungalows, the rocky ridge running parallel to Singapore?s western seashore has formed one of the most memorable of the island city-state?s landscapes. Extending from Clementi Road in the west to Alexandra Road in the east, and divided by the ?ninety-nine curves? of South Buona Vista Road, Kent Ridge extends its imaginative pull on many Singaporeans and visitors, but especially those who have graduated?or are studying?at the NUS. This book helps you look beneath the shiny exteriors of today?s institutions, to the area?s geological past, and the wealth of flora and fauna that still can be found here: from indigenous plants such as the tembusu, tiup tiup, and senduduk, to monitor lizards, flying dragons and oriental green snakes. The book guides you through the changing human geography of the region, and tells the inside stories behind the original campus master plan drawn up in the 1970s. Richly illustrated with photos, historical maps and images, each chapter of this book is written by NUS faculty and staff who are passionate about the Ridge. With contributions from Edwin Thumboo, Victor R. Savage, David Higgitt, Hugh Tan, Ho Chi Tim, Erik Holmberg,Tan Chye Guan, Kevin Y.L. Tan, Peck Thian Guan and Lee Fook Ngian.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Seen primarily as final resting places, cemeteries are increasingly under threat from urban redevelopment in land-scarce Singapore. Regarded as 'excess space' by state planners, and as 'taboo places' by the local populace, the rich historical and cultural heritage of our cemeteries have remained largely unappreciated and hidden.Today, there are about less than a dozen cemeteries left in Singapore. With the recent exhumation of major cemeteries like Bidadari Cemetery and Kong How Shua Cemetery, concerns have been raised about the status of cemeteries in Singapore.Spaces of the Dead: A Case from the Living brings together various authors concerned with the need for conservation of cemeteries in Singapore. This book showcases cemeteries as spaces of historical, architectural and social merit through the writings and photo-journals of the authors. We hope it will serve as an initial step in generating greater interest in and awareness of Singapore's cemeteries.
