Aggiungi al carrelloNo Binding. Condizione: Good. Original black-and-white stereoview photograph mounted on beige board. Board measures 7" x 3 1/4." Each stereoscopic image (half of the pair) measures 3" x 3." Stereoview photo is clean and intact overall but has some dampstaining, moderate darkening, and some smudges. Board is clean and intact overall but has dampstaining, moderate darkening, smudging, and slight wear to extremities. A Good copy. A stereoview photo that shows a diorama that was on display in the United States Government Building at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, Illinois. The diorama pays tribute to the ill-fated Greely Expedition, also known as the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, of 1881-1884. The expedition was commenced to gather scientific data and to establish a meteorological observation station in the Canadian Arctic, specifically in Lady Franklin Bay on Ellesmere Island. Adolphus Greely (1844-1935), a U.S. Army officer, was chosen to lead the expedition. Due to the arduous climate of the Far North, a shortage of rations and supplies, and other mishaps, only six of the original twenty-five men survived. In the diorama depicted in the stereoview, Greely and two of his comrades (represented likely as wax figures) take center stage. All of them wear Arctic attire and are standing next to a wall of ice. By their feet are sled dogs (likely taxidermies) and what appear to be supplies. Greely is shown to the right and greets the two other men, 2nd Lieutenant James B. Lockwood (who sadly died on the expedition in April 1884) and Sergeant David L. Brainard (he survived). Greely shakes one of their hands. The location represented in the diorama is Fort Conger. A small rail in the lower-left corner shows the boundaries of the diorama. Printed text is on front and back of board. Printed text in right margin on front: "Copyright 1893, by B. W. Kilburn." Title printed in bottom margin below right image. Text on back: "Photographed and Published by B. W. Kilburn, = Littleton, N.H." Benjamin West Kilburn (1827-1909) was an American photographer and founded his own stereoview publishing business. His brother, Edward Kilburn, also joined the business and it became known as Kilburn Brothers. A financial boon for the Kilburns happened when they gained exclusive rights to sell stereoviews at the 1893 World's Fair. …
