Two volumes complete. Original orange cloth boards with gilt coat of arms on front covers, navy spines and corners with gilt lettering spines, TEG, origina…l dark greenish navy coated EPs, untrimmed fore-edge and bottom edge both volumes. Both volumes have loss of much of the spine covering (see photos), but bindings are very solid and not broken or cracked. This set is an obvious candidate for rebacking. The covers have significant rubbing along edges and corners but the boards are relatively clean and bright with a few faint dark smudges (nothing serious). Each volume has previous owner's bookplate and small bookseller ticket on front pastedown otherwise no owner marks or writing on any pages, Some fore-edge foxing is present but nearly all pages are completely free of foxing and are clean. Each volume measures 251mm tall x 200mm (compared to 195mm tall for the regular first edition). Volume one has 494 pages, 20 b/w full-page illustrations and photos, 57 b/w in-text illustrations and photos, index. Volume two has 483 pages, 13 full-page illustrations and photos, 56 b/w in-text illustrations and photos, index. Volume one covers hunting in the arctic (whacking a giant walrus with an ax from a small whaling boat), three chapters on hunting in the Caucasus, a chapter on Mongolia, two chapter on hunting chamois and stags in the Alps, a chapter on elk in Scandinavia, a chapter on big game throughout Europe, hunting in Spain and Portugal, hunting in India tigers, a chapter on travel/camping considerations, a chapter on rifles and ammo, a chapter on taxidermy, a small bibliography. Volume two mostly about hunting in Africa with specific chapters on various types of big game hunting: lions, antelopes, hippos, giraffes, ostriches, rhinos, buffalo, elephants, with several chapters on South Africa including some history, a chapter on travel with Livingstone, some chapters on East Africa including special hunting considerations regarding gear, routes, etc. Volume two concludes with one chapter on big game hunting in North America (bears, wapiti, moose, cougars, bison, deer, elk, caribou, bighorn, mountain goat, antelope mainly in British Columbia, Alaska, Colorado and Pacific NW), and a brief chapter on hunting musk ox. Sunbeam, RYS was a composite-hulled barquentine with an auxiliary steam engine, which was launched in England in 1874. She was a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. She was the yacht of Thomas Brassey, 1st Earl Brassey until his death in 1918. His wife Anna Brassey wrote several popular books about their voyages aboard her, which were published between 1879 and 1889. This particular work is by the boats owner Thomas Brassey, and once again discusses sea voyages, and the author experience of the water. Brassey, born in 1836, was a Earl as well as a Liberal politician. Passionate about maritime he was the founder of The Naval Annual, a volume comprised of expansive information of naval history. Due to these publications, documenting the boat voyages, and the passion of its two owners, Sunbeam became an object of public interest and fascination. The Royal Yacht Squadron, or R.Y.S. is a prestigious yacht club, based in the Isle of White, to be member is considered a privilege. Member yachts add to suffix 'RYS' to their name, and are allowed to fly the flag of the Royal Navy. It originated in 1815, as a group of 42 men with an interest in yachting.

On another page, he wrotes a heartfelt prayer, expressing his need for God's pity at length. WITH: A. [MS.] "Extract of a letter from myself (CRW [C.R. Williams] giving an account of the Funeral of the Earl of Kilmorey who died at Gordon House at the age of 93", 2pp. fol. B. [Printed pamphlet] "The Story of a Certain Round Table" ([May 1879), 8pp., 8vo, formerly tipped in something, now sunned and loose and/detached where sewn. The pamphlet referred to a Roman Mosaic Table commissioned by Kilmorey when on a visit to Rome. The Table gained first prize at the Great Exhibition in 1851. Kilmorey (according to the account accompanying these items) gave it to his great friend Caroline, Dowager Marchioness of Downshire who later decided to sell it, causing the rift discussed in the pamphlet. It's now in the V & A.(http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O157742/table-the-beautiful-sky-of-italy/). No copy on COPAC or WorldCat. Note: Kilmorey's Family Seat is now at Mourne Park, Newry, Co. Down.

Due to clerical opposition, the Bill did not reach the statute book until 1907, and even then in a limited form. These seven items provide an interesting glimpse into the inner workings of the Vic…torian legislative process. All are clear and complete, and docketed by Dalhousie in red. All in fair condition, with various degrees of aging. Letter One: Sir Thomas Henry Farrer ('S Th Farrer'); 16 July 1885; 27 Bryanston Square, on letterhead of the Athenaeum Club, Pall Mall. 12mo, 3 pp. He is enclosing a copy (not present) of a letter which he sent 'to the Spectator last year on the subject of the Deceased Wifes sister Bill. - It may possibly be of some use to you, as it is a real case - my own. | I have always felt strongly against our present law, as a gross piece of clerical tyranny: - But I feel even yet more strongly against the hypocrisy which, afraid of resting the case on its real ground of ecclesiastical authority, tries to support it by social arguments which are if possible more revolting than they are false.' While he could not put his name to 'such a letter', 'the actual experience of one who has known what a sister in law may be - is perhaps of some value'. Letter Two: Francis Needham, 3rd Earl of Kilmorey ('Kilmorey'); 16 May 1885; on letterhead of Glenmore House, Rosstrevor, County Down, Ireland. They are not 'coming up to town this season', so wish to be paired in favour of the bill. 'Kind regards from self & wife to you & Lady Dalhousie & the twins!' Letter Three: Arthur Kinnaird, 10th Lord Kinnaird ('Kinnaird'); 8 June 1885; on letterhead of 1 Pall Mall East, London, S.W. 12mo, 2 pp. He has been 'very unwell lately', and his doctor has 'forbidden my doing more than is absolutely necessary - I therefore thought I ought to obey him & stay away'. Letter Four: George Hay, 12th Earl of Kinnoull ('Kinnoull'); 27 May 1885; on letterhead of Dupplin Castle, Perth. 12mo, 2 pp. He is 'anxious to support the second reading of the bill', but as he does not 'expect to be in London at that time' he asks for a pair. Letter Five: Douglas Graham, 5th Duke of Montrose ('Montrose'); 28 May 1885; on letterhead of Buchanan Castle, Glasgow. He cannot be in his place, and asks for a pair. 12mo, 2 pp. Letter Six: George Byng, 3rd Earl of Strafford ('Strafford'); 14 May 1885; on letterhead of Wrotham Park, Barnet Herts. 16mo, 3 pp. His 'zeal for the success of your motion is unabated', but he 'cannot entertain the most remote hope of being able to record my vote [.] The discredited alternative of a Pair is my only chance of serving the cause, & perhaps, in the interval before the 2nd Reading, you may in your energetic arrangements hear of some (I hope, more convalescent) opponent with whom I might be linked.' He is sure 'Enfield' would 'assist in the search'. Letter Seven: Edward Montagu-Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Wharncliffe ('Wharncliffe'); 16 May 1885; British Embassy, Vienna. 12mo, 2 pp. There is 'no chance' of his being present. 'We remain here for another ten days, and then have to go down to Yorkshire'.
