Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This volume collects the results of an exhaustive independent study of the West Indies following the emancipation of enslaved Africans. Undertaken by a non-slaveholding American delegation in the 1830s, this invaluable work presents a full picture of a society in transition. The authors compile first-hand accounts from emancipated individuals, interviews with government officials, planters, missionaries, and other stakeholders, and an array of statistics on the health, education, and economic output of the islands. The authors find that by all measures, emancipation has been a profound success. Productivity has increased, crime has decreased, and freed peoples are thriving in all aspects of life. The authors hope that by detailing the unequivocal benefits of emancipation in the West Indies, the United States might be inspired to pursue a similar path. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Published in 1838 by the American Anti-Slavery Society, who had commissioned their investigative tour, Thome and Kimball's Emancipation in the West Indies immediately became an influential abolitionist text. Many anti-abolitionists in America were prophesying major upheaval should slavery be outlawed. Slavery had been officially abolished in the British West Indies in 1827, and the object of the tour was to assess the results there. The islands visited had followed different models ranging from total abolition to a gradual change through apprenticeship until 1838, and the results had proved those who feared abolition wrong. There had been no insurrection or increase in crime, participation in education and religion among former slaves had generally increased, and only the former slave-owners were unhappy about the economic consequences for their estates. The book contains documentary evidence from residents and officials of the islands, describing the effects of emancipation.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. Octavo. xi, 489 pages. More than 600,000 women signed a petition to end the so-called "apprentice system" in an appeal directly to Queen Victoria. While some of the smaller editions were issued by the Anti-slavery examiner with only 128 pages (and a few at 32 pages) this is the largest edition with an index. The map was not included in this particular edition though the index has been expanded. The Appendix also has the records of sugar market. It shows that once slaves were emancipated, the markets for sugar, rum, coffee and other products actually increased. This is one of the reasons Southern Planters sought to destroy copies of this book. In other words, if its conclusions were correct the abolition of slavery would ultimately be beneficial from an economic point of view. The authors, of course, did not understand the deepest fears of the Southern aristocracy that saw any abridgement of the Southern way of life as detrimental to all that was good. Even the poorest dirt farmer who could not afford to buy a slave longed for enough wealth to have slaves to help him rise to the wealth from the cotton market. Bound in the original brown embossed cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, some chipping to spine ends and light wear along edges and corners but overall in good condition with some light scattered foxing.…
