This book innovatively combines traditional manuscript study with contemporary cultural game theory to show how the fourteenth-century Middle English romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight launches a multidimensional game with its late-fourteenth-century elite reader in its unique manuscript context, London, British Library, Cotton MS Nero A X/2. Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This book innovatively combines medieval manuscript study with contemporary cultural game theory to show how the Middle English romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight launches a multidimensional game with its late-fourteenth-century elite reader. The reading games within Sir Gawain and the Green Knight extend to the layout of the poem as found in its one extant manuscript, London, British Library, Cotton MS Nero A X/2. This study offers a more comprehensive examination of games and gaming in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the manuscript as a whole, its four poems and its illustrations, than has been published to date. Reading, before printed editions, was an activity that involved interacting with the visual layout of the text on the page. The authors find that a medieval reader's ludic interaction with this singular medieval codex could amuse but also serve as a means to serious ends, specifically redemptive knowledge. Couch and Bell conclude that the textual and visual games of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the Cotton Nero manuscript allow a fourteenth-century English Christian aristocracy to align courtly gaming with heavenly goals, thereby justifying elite amusements.…

Condizione: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | This book innovatively combines traditional manuscript study with contemporary cultural game theory to show how the enigmatic fourteenth-century Middle English romance, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, launches a multidimensional game with the reader in its unique manuscript context, Cotton Nero A.x. The authors argue that the poem positions the reader as a player who constructs meaning through the poem's multivalent games within games: the exchange-of-winnings game nested within the exchange-of-blows game, nested within the Christmas games of Arthur's court. The reader's agency especially comes to the foreground when one takes the gaming aspects of the manuscript layout into account. The varying placement of the bobs, along with other codicological aspects of MS Cotton Nero A.x, brings a meta-textual level of game into play, one that ultimately authorizes reading as a variable action. The authors conclude that fluid reading does not undermine the spiritual devotion evoked in the manuscript, but deepens it through the dialectic of game.…

Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 368 pp. Original laminated boards. Near Fine. The late thirteenth-century, monolingual Oxford manuscript, Bodleian Library, MS Laud Misc. 108, bears singular importance to medieval studies, for it preserves and anthologizes unique versions of several seminal Middle English texts, including South English Legendary, Havelok the Dane, and King Horn and Somer Soneday. While critics have traditionally classified these poems by genre, this book returns them to their manuscript context in a comprehensive examination of this vernacular codex. Considering the manuscript as a "whole book" rather than a miscellany of romances, saints' lives, and religious poems, these inter-connected essays focus on the physical, contextual, and critical intersections of Bodleian Library, MS Laud Misc. 108. Codicological evidence foregrounds the manuscript's investment in a particular vision of an English Christian identity. Contributors are A.S.G. Edwards, Thomas R. Liszka, Murray J.
