The reason for this probably lies in the fact that the real motive for the expedition, which had very far-reaching results, was as far as possible kept secret, and any official report that may have been made by its leader was either delivered verbally or, if written, was treated as confidential and therefore never made public. No official reference to it is to be found in either our South African Archives or in the Public Record Office in London, and no report of it exists in either institution.".
