From the blurb: "This facsimile of Richard Wiseman's treatises, "Of Wounds, of Gun-shot Wounds and of Fractures and Luxations", first published in his "Severall Chirurgicall Treatises" of 1676, displays vividly the challenge of serious injury and the condition of accident… surgery three centuries ago. Derived from extensive military, naval and civilian practice, his detailed 129 observations, of both fortunate and unfortunate patients, contribute significantly to British social history and will continue to enrich surgical literature for all time. In recognising imperfection in the "art of chirurgery", he wrote prophetically, "How many Gaps do still lie open in this goodly Fabrick, and how much is wanting to make the Building compleat". Yet the wisdom and integrity of his own contribution ensured five unchanged printings of the treatises, after his death, and their continued use for a century; this facsimile is the first edited version of Wiseman's work. Introduced by an account of a diverse and often mysterious career, which included Mastership of the Barber-Surgeons and a Sergeant- Surgeoncy to Charles II, his text is amplified by contemporary plates of instruments and equipment, a biographical appendix of authors quoted and colleagues encountered in consultation and a glossary of seventeenth century surgical and pharmaceutical terms."
