Mit einem Gesamtverzeichnis der Holzschnitte. Der expressionistische…Holzschneider (1910-1938) erhielt seine erste Ausbildung an der Folkwangschule bei Karl Rössing. Nach der NS-Machtübernahme kam er auf Grund seiner KPD-Mitgliedschaft ins KZ Börgermoor. 1934 entlassen, vernichtete er aus Angst vor weiteren Repressionen den Großteil seiner politischen Arbeiten und verlegte sich auf Buchillustrationen zu unverfänglichen literarischen Themen, so gestaltete er beispielweise die Umschläge für die Faulkner-Ausgaben Ernst Rowohlts und illustrierte Hans Falladas "Märchen vom Stadtschreiber, der aufs Land flog". 1937 floh er mit Hilfe Rowohlts zuerst nach Kopenhagen und ging von dort nach Paris ins Exil. 1938 nahm er am Spanischen Bürgerkrieg auf Seiten der Internationalen Brigaden teil und fiel dort vermutlich in der Schlacht am Ebro.
