Kiyoshi Sonobe (illustratore). 158 pages, chiefly illustrations (some color). Somewhat shelfworn. Book and dust jacket are both very good. Slipcase is sound but is worn, rubbed, and unevenly sun-faded at edges. Nihon no Tako (1970), by Yusaku Tawara with photographs by Kiyoshi Sonobe, is part of the postwar movement to document regional Japanese folk crafts, including kite-making traditions that were increasingly threatened by urbanization and industrialized toys. Scholars such as Cecile Laly cite the book as a valuable primary source for understanding regional kite forms and techniques, situating it within the broader mingei-influenced effort of the 1960s-70s to record and preserve traditional crafts.
