Klemmer had been a journalist earlier in his life, but the same year this book was published he moved on to another career -- as an advisor to Joseph P. Kennedy and subsequently a globe-trotting U.S. diplomat. His association with Kennedy began when the latter was chairman of the U.S. Maritime Commission, and Klemmer stuck with him when he was named U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain; this launched Klemmer on a long career with the U.S. State Department, traveling to assignments around the world; later in life he served as an advisor or consultant to many foreign governments.
