Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Forgotten Village Life in a Mexican Village, Steinbeck, John; Rosa Harvan Kline & Alexander Hackensmid. Published by The Viking press, 1941. First Edition with "First Published in May 1941" on the copyright page. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; 143pp. with preface by Steinbeck and 136 photographs from the film of the same name by Rosa Harvan Kline and Alexander Hackenschmied. Buckram cloth boards with green illustration to front, top edge green. In very good condition. The Forgotten Village is a 1940 documentary film for which Steinbeck wrote the screenplay; it was the first time Steinbeck had written directly for film. The story follows the coming of modern medicine to the natives of Mexico and is centered on a boy who detaches himself from a society dominated by superstitions. The boy comes to the realization that education is the only tool that can help break the wall of ignorance that separates the remote village from the rest of the world, and can ultimately save the members of the small community from suffering and death. The people who appear in the film are actual peasants, doctors and teachers, not actors. Steinbeck and the film's director Herbert Kline insisted on paying the amateur Mexican actors a high wage, thus angering their regular employers, the farm owners, who then tried to stop the filming until the richest owner gave his approval to the arrangement. The film was shot over a ten-month period in Mexico. The film was originally banned by censors because of scenes in which a mother breast-feeds her child and another in which a midwife is shown aiding a woman in childbirth. After the film's sponsors protested the censors' decision, it was reversed by the State Board of Regents. …

Condizione: Near Fine. dj. First edition, first printing. 143, [1] pp. 10.25" x 7.25" STEINBECK'S SCREENPLAY Fresh from the extraordinary success of The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck turned to cinema for The Forgotten Village, his first work written directly for the screen. Set in rural Mexico, the story pits inherited folk practices against modern medicine as contaminated water brings illness to an isolated community. Published by Viking in May 1941, the book transforms the film into a remarkable photographic narrative illustrated with 136 production stills. An overlooked but revealing experiment in documentary realism from one of America's central twentieth-century writers. Some offsetting to endpapers, light toning extremities, more so to spine, near fine in lightly worn and faintly chipped dust jacket in mylar cover. Tan coarse cloth, illustratively stamped in green, in illustrated dust jacket ($2.50). With 136 photographs from the film of the same name (illustratore).…
