Die chilenische Expedition fand 1911 statt und die Ergebnisse wurden in Chile in deutscher Sprache veröffentlicht. ?Dem aus Berlin stammenden Meteorologen und Biophysiker Walter Knoche wurde von der chilenischen Regierung 1911 die wissenschaftliche Leitung der ersten chilenischen Osterinsel-Expedition übertragen. Mit dem Schiff "General Baquedano" gelangte eine mehrköpfige wissenschaftliche Kommission auf die abgelegene polynesische Insel, die seit 1888 unter chilenischer Kolonialverwaltung gestanden, jedoch bis zu der Expedition keine nähere Beachtung gefunden hatte. Der heute weitgehend unbekannte Wissenschaftler verfasste 1925 das Buch "Die Osterinsel". Da es ihm noch möglich war, die letzten beiden Osterinsulaner, die die alten Kulturtraditionen der im Aussterben begriffenen Kultur kannten, zu befragen, dokumentierte er Bräuche und Überlieferungen, die schon wenige Jahre später gänzlich verloren gegangen sind.?(Mückler, H.).
