Odysseus' reliance on his wit & wiliness for survival in his encounters w/ divine & natural forces is at once the human story & an individual test of moral endurance. In the myths & legends that are magnificently retold here, Fagles has captured the energy & poetry of Homer's original in a bold, contemporary idiom & given us an Odyssey to read aloud, to savor & to treasure for its sheer lyrical mastery. Renowned classicist Bernard Knox's superb introduction & textual commentary provide new insights & background information for the general reader & scholar, intensifying the strength of Fagles' translation. This is an Odyssey to delight both the classicist & the public at large, & to captivate a new generation of Homer's students. HIGHEST PRAISE: "Fagles' 'Odyssey' is a splendid companion piece to his memorable English version of the 'Iliad'. He has managed to create a poetic style that combines the pungency of modern colloquial English w/ a timeless dignity. The sensory values of Odysseus' archaic world, the snap of sails, the scud of sea-foam & the gleam of burnished bronze come wonderfully alive in this supple, rhythmic English" - Robert Alter, University of California, Berkeley * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: ROBERT FAGLES, the winner of the PEN-Ralph Mannheim Medal for Translation & an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts & Letters, is Arthur W. Marks '19 Professor of Comparative Literature, Emeritus, at Princeton University & received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Yale University.
