In 1994, four tattered scrapbooks containing 500 watercolor drawings and maps of Civil War Virginia were discovered in a Connecticut bank vault, and offered for sale at auction. Eventually acquired by the Virginia Historical Society, additional research produced a Civil War diary written by the painter, Private Robert K. Sneden, containing 5,000 handwritten pages and hundreds of additional drawings and maps. This book reproduces portions of the diary and hundreds of the watercolors. Sneden served as a mapmaker at the headquarters of the Army of the Potomac, was eventually captured, and ended up in Andersonville prison. A beautifully produced work, the dust jacket blurb states that the book "is one of the most important Civil War documents to be published since Ulysses S. Grant's "Personal Memoirs.".
