Marston wurde nun von Hans Gebhardt, Peter Meusburger und Doris Wastl-Walter überarbeitet und für die deutsche Ausgabe an die europäischen Verhältnisse angepasst. Im Buch werden verschiedene zentrale Themen der Humangeographie dargestelltdie globale Gesellschaft und ihre Auswirkungen auf die verschiedenen Bevölkerungsgruppen, die dynamische Entwicklung der Weltbevölkerung, das Spannungsfeld Natur Gesellschaft Technik sowie Fragen aus den Bereichen Kultur- und Wirtschaftsgeographie. Besprochen werden aber auch Ansätze zur Interpretation von Räumen, Aspekte der Landwirtschaft, Grenzkonflikte zwischen politischen Territorien sowie Probleme von städtischen Strukturen. Abgerundet wird das Werk durch ein einleitendes Kapitel zur Bedeutung der Geographie als Fachgebiet sowie einen abschliessenden Ausblick zum Thema «Geographie der Zukunft». Das Buch richtet sich nicht nur an Studenten des Fachs Geographie, sondern stellt, da es für Laien verständlich geschrieben ist, auch ein interessantes Nachschlagewerk dar. Störend ist einzig, dass zahlreiche der abgebildeten Karten auf eher ungewöhnlichen Projektionen basieren. Diese Karten sind nicht sehr übersichtlich, weisen teilweise irritierende Verzerrungen auf und werden dem Anspruch der Autoren, keiner der Kontinente solle eine beherrschende Position einnehmen, nicht wirklich gerecht.
