In this classic of travel writing, first published sixty years ago, a Danish journalist records his experience of life in North Africa under colonial rule. Driving through the Sahara in a battered Chevrolet, having converted to Islam and with a knowledge of Arabic, he leaves the beaten track to discover communities and landscapes shrouded in mystery for centuries. Brushes with magicians, cave-dwellers and Sufi mystics, however, prove less astonishing than the cruelties inflicted on the local populations by Mussolini's generals.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. Knud Holmboe. Desert Encounter An Adventurous Journey Through Italian Africa. Lon: George G. Harrap & Co., 1936, 1st. English edition, 1st printing, 282 pp. *** VG+ in G+ dust jacket. Holmboe attempted to drive an automobile across the northern Sahara, dressed as an Arab, from Morocco to Egypt. The car broke down along an uninhabited sea coast of Italian-occupied North Africa, and Holmboe and his companions were lost for ten days, suffering from thirst and other privations of the desert. While in what is now Libya Holmboe observed vast concentration camps of Bedouin Arabs, daily hangings, brutality, and was arrested by Italian authorities as a spy. A fascinating account of the old and the new in North Africa in the years just before the outbreak of World War II. Frontis. b&w photo portrait of the author and sixty (60) b&w photo illustrations, two or more to a page, taken by the author under great difficulties with a small camera. With original illustrated Dust Jacket (not price clipped) in a clear protective cover. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Bound in dark plum cloth boards and spine with gilt lettering on spine. The covers are clean with the lightest of wear, corners slightly bumped. The jacket is clean with very light wear, slight chipping at corners, on edges, and at spine ends (½ inch chip at bottom of spine with loss of one letter). The contents are clean and complete in a good binding. VG in G+ jacket. *** 8.75 inches tall by 6.25 inches.
