The car broke down along an uninhabited sea coast of Italian-occupied North Africa, and Holmboe and his companions were lost for ten days, suffering from thirst and other privations of the desert. While in what is now Libya Holmboe observed vast concentration camps of Bedouin Arabs, daily hangings, brutality, and was arrested by Italian authorities as a spy.
