[32 pp.] Provenance: from the Estate of Judy Stone (1924 -2017), The San Francisco Chronicle's movie critic who for two decades was a passionate and articulate advocate for the world of cinema outside Hollywood. Judy S…tone started at the San Francisco Chronicle in 1961, putting in 10 years as editor of the Datebook section. She began reviewing films for the paper in 1971, favoring arthouse films. She was the youngest of four politically minded children whose eldest brother was the great reporter and gadfly I. F. Stone.She won the Novikoff Award given for "enhancing the public's appreciation of world cinema." Among her publications are "The Mystery of B. Traven" and "Eye on the World," a collection of her interviews with filmmakers from the 1960s to the 1990s.

This is a limited edition alpha-bestiary written by and illustrated by noted wood engraver Richard Wagener. Richard Wagener (born 1944) is an American wood engraver known for his prints and fine press… books. His work has been collected by over one hundred and thirty public institutions. Wagener has been engraving wood for over forty years and his work has been in a number of fine press editions, most notably with Peter Koch in Berkeley and the Book Club of California. In 2006 Richard established his own imprint Mixolydian Editions to publish his own fine press editions of his work. Zebra Noise with a Flatted Seventh, was his first artist's book and was included in Artists' Books in the Modern Era, 1870-2000 at the Legion of Honor, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. This witty and artistic work includes 26 full page wood engravings in black that face a page of text. These are introduced by 26 small engravings in red with a letter of the alphabet. The text pages have 26 laconic short fictions that are obliquely related to the biological alphabet. The text pages are preceded by a page with a list of the animals along with their Latin names. Animals depicted include the armadillo, common European frog, blackened moray eel, jack rabbit, locust, walrus, prairie dog, fiddler crab, vampire bat and flea. All engravings were printed by the artist. Peter Koch printed the letterpress text on Zerkall paper in Erhardt types. Bound by Peggy Gotthold in quarter red leather with a gray paper covered boards, with the title and the image of the armadillo on the cover. Title in gilt on spine. In a gray cloth covered portfolio and both housed in a red slipcase with a gray title label to spine. In fine condition. Measures 8.5 x 14.5 inches. Unpaginated [55 leaves]. PRI/092024. Signed.

This copy ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY BRINGHURST on the colophon,"for Allen Mears, the kind of reader / Parmenides has waited for / 17.1.2004." Folio, blind-stamped full black leather; approximately 50 unnumbered pages with original Greek and English translations on opposing pages; illustrated with black-and-white frontis engraving and 4 full-page color engravings. With separate SUITE OF TEN WOOD ENGRAVINGS, EACH SIGNED BY WAGENER, laid in an orange silk-covered chemise; and 2 broadside type specimens for the typefaces specially made for this edition by Dan Carr and Christopher Stinehour. The book, suite of engravings, and broadsides are housed together in publisher's orange silk-covered "drop-back" box. Also includes the prospectus in original envelope, 4-page "Key to the Specimen of the Parmenides Type," and a copy of the companion volume, CARVING THE ELEMENTS (Berkeley: 2004), featuring essays from each of the book's contributors that document the 10-year history behind the making of the book. NO TRADE EDITION ISSUED - only these 26 deluxe copies in full leather with the extra suite of engravings and type specimens housed in a special box and 120 numbered copies in quarter leather with clamshell case, 20 of which were reserved for the contributors. ALSO INCLUDES collector Allen Mears' extensive file of ephemera and correspondence related to the project, including LETTERS SIGNED BY BRINGHURST (3), KOCH (2), and WAGENER (1) and printouts of email correspondence with each as well as various others. With nearly 1/3 of the copies in libraries per OCLC and given the small number printed, not to mention the 20 copies to the contributors, it is understandable that this remarkable production is scarce to rare on the market.
