Hardback. Condizione: New. Borrowing its title from Greil Marcus' 1997 book The Old, Weird America: The World of Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes, this publication is produced in conjunction with an exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, which considers the work of 16 artists who explore American folk imagery and history from the time of European settlement to the 1960s. Dylan, Marcus argues, was influential because he explored an older, half-forgotten world of American legend that seemed at once stranger and more telling than anything found in the mainstream. The artists featured in this volume, all of whom came to prominence in the last decade, include Jeremy Blake, Sam Durant, Barnaby Furnas, Brad Kahlhamer, Margaret Kilgallen, Dario Robleto, Allison Smith and Kara Walker, among others. As a group, they draw on folklore for its ability to illuminate American cultural life in its strange mixture of civilization and barbarism, enlightenment and madness.

Ostfildern-Ruit, Cantz Verlag, / D.A.P., Distributed Art Publishers, 1998. 4to. 28,6 x 24 cms. 344 pp. Richly illustrated, largely in colour. Bibliography and index. Accompanies an exhibition shown at Philadelphia Museum of Art, October 8, 1998-January 3, 1999 and The Menil Collection, Houston, January 22-May 16, 1999. - - - (From the Preface:) "The Duchamp Dossier, a little-known and until now undocumented cross between a work of art and an idiosyncratic archive, is the starting point for this exhibition and publication, which chronicle the friendship and working relationship between two of the twentieth century's most innovative and influential artists - Joseph Cornell and Marcel Duchamp. The evidence of their collaboration is chiefly contained in Cornell's elaborate file on Duchamp, one of the most intimate of the compilations that Cornell termed 'explorations.' Following Cornell's death in December 1972, Walter Hopps discovered the Duchamp Dossier among Cornell's effects in his house on Utopia Parkway. Soon thereafter, Hopps conceived of an exhibition exploring the affinities between the two artists through a focused selection of works using the Duchamp Dossier as a centerpiece. Joseph Cornell / Marcel Duchamp . in resonance is the fulfillment of that initial impulse. In his role as adviser to The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation, Hopps was instrumental in shepherding the Foundation's gift of the Duchamp Dossier in 1990 to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. As the greatest repository of Duchamp's work, the Philadelphia Museum of Art was the natural choice for the Duchamp Dossier's permanent home. The Menil Collection with its substantial holdings of Cornell's work, collected by John and Dominique de Menil beginning in the early 1950s, provides a useful springboard for engagement with this artist's oeuvre".
