It will be examined why the physically potentially dangerous and aggressive Sun Dance was practiced in some tribes and why the Plains Indians as well as some Native Americans today identify with the ritual. Showing that the customs are far from being merely pointless and brutal, the paper reveales the messages that Sun Dance - or Body Suspension rituals try to convey. Due the large number of existing Plains Indians tribes, the paper restricts the investigations to only two tribes of North America, that is, to the Arapaho and the Cherokees. However, the Plains Indians are also considered in general terms in the essay.

It is therefore an important societal responsibility to offer every person the opportunity to become a skilled reader, and in many cases, this means becoming a skilled L2 reader.' (GRABE 2009: 6) As GRABE reveals with his statement, reading has become an indispensable language skill not only in an individual's mother tongue, but preferably also in its acquired foreign language, without which it is difficult, if not impossible to make career nowadays. Wherever we go outside our homes, we will see and read print, even so in more deprived areas, such as on hiking trails, where instead of advertising wallpapers we are likely to encounter signposts that guide us. Since information transfer is reserved to both oral and written communication in modern society, reading remains the only option to decode writing. However, developing reading skills is more than just improving one's word recognition and decoding abilities. GRABE points out that 'most words build phonological activation prior to lexical access' (2009: 24) in the word recognition process that combines the interactive areas of orthography, phonology and meaning. This characteristic of reading allows for unconscious pronunciation drilling and training even though it can be assumed that readers will occasionally consciously check the pronunciation of certain unfamiliar words. Whether or not supported by conscious learning, reading seemingly prepares learners for oral communication by maintaining constant phonological activation. Moreover, recognized words in the reading process are supposed to transmit some activation energy to their 'semantic neighbours in the lexical network when they are accessed.' (GRABE 2009: 25/26) Known as the notion of spreading activation (GRABE 2009: 25), this phenomenon suggests that reading establishes a cognitive network of connotations that learners acquire to broaden their lexis for idiomatic application in communicative contexts.As one may quickly realize, reading involves learning about both language and content, which is why it simply must be part of a regular English lesson. Therefore, the research question addressed in this paper is what English language teachers should keep in mind when developing reading tasks for both First (L1) and Second Language Learners (L2).

This very continuity means that it is difficult to place them at one remove from us in 'history'.' (HOPKINS 2004: Introduction)Defining Surrealism has become, as HOPKINS's statement illustrates, a very challenging task due to its wide prevalence in contemporary speech and language, which makes it difficult to isolate Surrealism historically and to distinguish between its intended meanings within certain historical epochs. As the following section will outline, Surrealism has been continuously influenced and shaped from generation to generation and has therefore been marked by different characteristics throughout history. The long historical chronology (cf. ASPLEY 2010: XV) of the surreal has indeed caused a lot of confusion with regard to the usage of the term, which should always be contextualized within the respective examined epoch in order to 'grasp' its intended 'spirit'.This research paper aims at examining and defining the early twentieth century Surrealist Movement more closely, which has been described in the Manifeste du surréalisme in 1924 by ANDRÉ BRETON, who seems to be widely acknowledged as the father of Surrealism. After a brief theoretical section outlining a short historical chronology of Surrealism and commenting on BRETON's influence on the Surrealist Movement in 20th Century France, chapter 3 will present an analysis of Nadja (1928), one of BRETON's most important surrealist novels forming the 'climax of the literary movement of Surrealism in France' (REENTS 2009: 31). The analysis will be carried out from a predominantly photographic angle to examine how photography relates to the concept of the surreal and how it helps define Surrealism in BRETON's time.

Obwohl sie 'nur eine Auflage' erlebte und in Frankreich 'kaum bekannt' (2008: 233) war, scheint dieses Werk neben der erläuterten Normierungsfunktion auch in didaktischer Hinsicht, wie in Kapitel 2.1 klar wird, ein sehr wichtiges in England gewesen zu sein.In Frankreich einen großen Erfolg geerntet hat hingegen VAUGELAS mit seinen Remarques sur la langue françoise (1647) im 17. Jahrhundert, die eine Art Wortschatzlexikon (vgl. KOLBOOM 2002: 33) auf seiner berühmten Formel des bon usage basierend bilden und 'die Sprache einer gesellschaftlichen Elite zum Kriterium einer gehobenen Norm' (2002: 33) definieren.Diese beiden wichtigen Werke des 16. und 17. Jhdts. sollen in Kapitel 4 zu einer kontrastiven Analyse zweier grammatischer Aspekte bzw. Phänomene zur Ermittlung grammatischer Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede sowohl in struktureller als auch semantischer Hinsicht herangezogen werden, um ein besseres Verständnis für die noch näher zu ermittelnden, abweichenden Werkkonzeptionen bzw. -sorten zu entwickeln. Die vorangehenden Kapitel sollen hingegen auf die nachfolgende Analyse hinarbeitend diese transparenter erleuchten, indem sie sprachgeschichtliche und soziale Einflüsse in PALSGRAVES und VAUGELAS' Zeit vertiefen und auf einige allgemeine strukturell-inhaltliche Unterschiede in ihren Werken eingehen. 28 pp. Deutsch.

LW PS: Littérature, cinéma et autres médias (Guilla…ume Apollinaire), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die ästhetisch- moderne Realität im Rahmen der literarischen Bewegung des Surrealismus, so wie sie von Durry geschildert wird, ist ein zentrales Merkmal der avantgardistischen Lyrik von Apollinaire, welches als Forschungsobjekt dieser Hausarbeit in einem möglichst differenzierten analytischen Essay näher diskutiert wird. Darüber hinaus und aus diesem thematischen Rahmen erschließend soll der Wahrheitsanspruch der Hypothese, dass der Titel von Apollinaires Gedichtband, Alcools, äußerst positive als auch negative semantische Konnotationen besitzt, an einigen herausgegriffenen Gedichten abgewogen und geprüft werden. Dass das von Jauss behandelte Konzept der Simultaneität in seiner Abhandlung 'Die Epochenschwelle von 1912' ebenfalls eine semantische Zweiseitigkeit oder Pluralität aufweist, wird in dieser Arbeit überdies untersucht, unter Einbeziehung gewagter, aber möglichst plausibler Bezüge zu Apollinaires zwiespältiger Lebensgeschichte. 28 pp. Deutsch.
