Kroch wurde in Rawicz in Preußen (heute Polen) geboren. In seiner Jugend studierte er an der örtlichen Jeschiwa bei Aaron Joshua Elijah b. Solomon, der zuvor Rabbiner von Glogau und von 1814 bis 1846 Rabbiner von Rawicz gewesen war. Im Alter von 15 Jahren ging Kroch zur Jeschiwa von Jacob Judah * Falk nach Dyernfurth. 1837 schickte ihn Falk zu Akiva * Eger nach Posen. Letzterer war außerordentlich freundlich zu ihm und auf seinen Rat hin heiratete Kroch Falks ältere Tochter. Während er im Haus seines Schwiegervaters war, widmete Kroch seine ganze Zeit dem Studium und setzte dies auch nach dessen Umzug nach Breslau fort, obwohl er früher eine Stunde am Tag geschäftlich unterwegs war. In seinen Studien spezialisierte sich Kroch insbesondere auf das Thema des Konflikts zwischen ?azakah ("Vermutung") und rov ("der Mehrheit folgen").
