Wie wurde die Revolution in der Rückschau bewertet? Unter diesen leitenden Fragestellungen zeichnen jüngere Historiker und Historikerinnen das politische Profil von sieben Abgeordneten in der Frankfurter Paulskirche nach, die im Frühjahr 1848 ihren Wohnsitz in Heidelberg hatten: Georg G. Gervinus, Robert von Mohl, Gustav Höfken, Karl Mittermaier, Karl Th. Welcker, Karl Hagen und Christian Kapp - allesamt Universitätslehrer. Die Konzentration der Fragestellung auf die parlamentarische Tätigkeit sowie die Berücksichtigung bisher unbeachteter Quelle erbringen neue Einsichten in die politische Arbeit in jener stürmischen Phase deutscher Geschichte; bei einigen der weniger bekannten Abgeordneten war gar Pionierarbeit zu leisten. Ein Beitrag über die Parteizeitung der gemäßigten Liberalen, die Deutsche Zeitung, an deren Gründung viele der in diesem Band vertretenen Persönlichkeiten maßgeblich beteiligt waren, rundet die Sammlung biographischer Untersuchungen ab. Da fast alle Fraktionen der Paulskirche und auch allgemeinere Aspekte der parlamentarischen Arbeit in Frankfurt berücksichtigt werden, bieten die in diesem Buch vereinigten Aufsätze ein plastisches Abbild der Nationalversammlung.
