TWO OBSCURE AND RARE EPHEMERA . * This listing is for two related items, honoring Hearn's time in Matsue: . Item 1.: A Japanese paper lantern, as used by Hearn during his sojourn in Matsue: . Japanese title: KOIZUMI YAKUMO NO OBAKE ANDON: THE HAUNTED LAMP-STAND OF LAFCADIO HEARN. . This is a 3-dimensional color folding lantern of the late 19th century [pre electricity in Japan era]. It has the typical shape of a floor lantern, but with three-folding tabs which reveal scary monsters, skeletons & ogres. . The lantern can be folded flat. Then it can be opened to be a box shape, with two full length opening 'doors.' Upon opening these 2 doors, it reveals a sleeping man with visions of his nightmares of goblins, ghosts and ghouls! . The folded lantern measures 13 x 15.5 cm., when opened it becomes a square box lantern 4.4 x 4.4 cm. wide and 15.5 cm. tall. . The lantern is contained in a Washi [handmade paper] folded envelope, with brushed titles in Japanese & English, cinnabar sealed with Hearn's "Heron" Hanko [seal/chop]. . * Item 2.: CENTENNIAL TELEPHONE CARDS OF LAFCADIO HEARN'S ARRIVAL IN JAPAN. Consisting of a double-folding & opening card with two views of the color lantern on the front cover, with Hearn's signature. First fold open to the Hearn text found in his 1904 publication with title: Kwaidan [Ghost Story] about the Dan-no-ura battle of the Heike and Taira clans. Opening again it reveals a 17 item bibliographical list of Hearn titles and date of publication [English & Japanese]. . The back shows the typical Hearn walking with back to the viewer carrying two suitcases wearing a broad brim hat. With "Yuki Onna" [Snow Woman] text in the background, and the Centennial committee name, address and dates of the celebration. . Accompanied with a full page of Japanese explanatory text sheet. . The work folds to 10 x 15 cm. I folds open the first time to be 20 x 15 cm., then folds open one more time to be nearly 40 x 15 cm. . The two telephone cards are not present.
