Softcover. Condizione: Very Good. In Very Good+ condition. In 1911, The Kolb brothers, Emery and Ellsworth, young photographers living on the South Rim of Grand Canyon, conceived a preposterous expedition: although neither of them knew much about whitewater, they had two wooden rowboats built, and proposed to row them the entire eleven hundred miles of the Green and Colorado Rivers. The trip was not solely for thrills. They planned to make not just still and stereo photographs, but moving pictures as well. .Against all odds, the three men emerged from Grand Canyon in January, 1912, with photographs and movies they would show and sell for the next sixty years. Here for the first time are their on-the-spot accounts, transcribed from the journals they penciled late at night along the shore. Theirs is a tale of phenomenal courage, terrific luck, and dogged perseverance. And in spite of unending hardship, the brothers had nearly as much fun doing it back then, as you will have following along nearly a century later.

New Edition with Additional Illustrations (76 plates) from photographs by the author and his brother. With author's inscription on a front blank preliminary, dated March 1953. Original decorative cover with colored mounted image with gilt title and lines on front cover and gilt titled spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Minor shelf rubbing, else cover is clean and bright. Interior is clean and tight. With clear mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The Kolb Brothers, Ellsworth and Emory, established themselves as both photographers and adventurers at the Grand Canyon in 1902. Their photographs of visitors and lesser-known areas of the canyon supported their studio for many decades. They rafted the river, explored its canyons and out of the way places, taking photographs all the time. While Ellsworth retired to Los Angeles and died in 1960, Emory continued to live and sell photographs and tourist books until his death in 1976. This book is signed in March 1953 at Grand Canyon Arizona. All the copies of this book I've ever seen have been signed. I think that any unsigned copy would be rare in comparison. Nevertheless, a very nice copy of the new edition with the additional photographs; and a terrific tale of adventure.

Silver gelatin photograph [25 cm x 20 cm] that has been tinted. Photographer's mark in the negative at the lower left. A few paper remnants on the back. This photograph shows a man and his pack mule on the rim with the Colorado River beneath. Title from the extensive Kolb collection held by Northern Arizona University. A striking view. The legendary Kolb Brothers, Emery & Ellsworth, opened their studio in 1904, perched on the rim of the Grand Canyon (it is the building that looms over the top of the Bright Angel Trail). The building is still standing but is now operated as a museum and gallery. They took countless images of the Canyon and the Colorado River below. Ellsworth and Emery Kolb were brothers, born in Pennsylvania, interested in photography and the 'Wild West.' In the winter of 1911, they made the first motion picture of a river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers, where the brothers were repeatedly tossed into the river by their bucking boats. At one memorable point, as Ellsworth struggled to stay afloat in the roiling Colorado, Emery captured the moment on film before rushing to his brother's rescue. Photographing the Grand Canyon was not an easy task in the early 1900s. Patience, determination, and physical strength were required to deal with cumbersome equipment and unforgiving conditions. Whenever possible, Emery and Ellsworth used burros to transport the bulky equipment on their Canyon explorations. But their best pictures were often taken in locations inaccessible to the animals, and they relied on their own brawn and balance to carry the cameras while climbing the Canyon walls, these exploits soon earned them the title 'daring photographers of the Grand Canyon.'.

Newspaper. Five issues of the Coconino Sun documenting the Kolb Brothers' journey down the Green and Colorado Rivers from 1911 to 1912. The five issues include: May 26, 1911, Volume XXVIII, Number 26; September 8, 1911, Volume XXVIII, Number 41; October 20, 1911, Volume XXVII, Number 47; November 17, 1911, Volume XXVIII, Number 51; November 24, 1911, Volume XXVIII, Number 52. The set does not include the last issue referring to the Kolb brothers' journey, dated to January 26, 1912. Issues have between 8pp to 12pp, many advertisements and a full page of illustrated cattle brands (around 58 brands). Included on the brand page of each issue is the brand illustration on the animal, written description of the brand, and range area of the herd, along with a horse brand chart. Prominent owner names include Babbitt, Hart, and Verkamp. Issues measure between 13" x 20" to 15" x 21 ½". In good condition. All issues are fragile with toning and tape repairs; chipped edges and some margin loss; all leaves are disbound, likely extracted from a book; "Territorial Lib 1106" rubber stamp on upper left corner of each issue. In the May 26, 1911 issue, editor Fred S. Breen published a short article on the Kolb brothers' intentions of taking a trip from the headwaters of the Green River to Needles. The article was titled "Will Attempt Perilous Trip" which led to a regular correspondence between the Coconino Sun and the Kolb Brothers. In the September 8, 1911 issue the brothers mention that they saw the notice in Breen's newspaper concerning their "contemplated trip for still and motion pictures through the Green and Colorado Rivers." They go on to say they have all their supplies and are ready to go but that "the town people here look on us as a physician might a hopeless case and then relate wierd [sic] stories of others who attempted the voyage and never heard from again." In the October 20, 1911 issue the article was titled "Making Perilous Jorney [sic]- Kolb Brothers Write Last from Jensen, Utah on Way Down Colorado," the writer of these articles continuing with the theme of the "perilous journey." And so it was, for in this issue the brothers disclose that "our third party would weep like a child when we got into tight places. We sent him home 155 miles overland to rail. We two will continue the trip alone." The next issue, November 17, 1911, mentions their experience through Cataract Canyon, their discovery of a man stranded but who refused their help, and in the end "their boats and camera's came through Cataract Canyon successfully." The last issue included here has quite interesting content, including an update that the Kolb Brothers reached the Grand Canyon "tired and wet, but happy," an article concerning the Prohibitionists on the State Ticket, another about a "Water Wizzard [sic] Well Worker," and a rather ridiculous article about a group of Oatman, Arizona bachelors proposing marriage en masse to 250 widows of Santa Monica, the article titled "These Bachelors Want Wives." Ellsworth and Emory Kolb completed their journey in January 1912, emerging from the Grand Canyon with photographs and films that they would show for the next sixty years. A rare record of the Kolb brothers' daring journey. No copies found in commerce as of January 2018.
