Twenty-fourth edition (Издание двадцать четвертое), Part One, described on the title page as a revised and enlarged edition with 105 illustrations in the text. An attractive and historically interesting Imperial Russian school reader, printed in pre-revolutionary Russian orthography. Ushinsky was one of the most important figures in the history of Russian education, and Detskii Mir i Khrestomatiia became one of his best-known and most widely used educational works. The volume combines elementary reading with natural history, science, Russian history, prose, fables and poetry. It is particularly appealing for its numerous finely executed period illustrations, including animals, birds and other subjects from the natural world. This is Part One of the two-part work, complete in its two internally separately paginated sections: Detskii Mir, 192 pages, followed by Khrestomatiia, 66 pages. The latter concludes with the printed word КОНЕЦЪ (End) on page 66. The title page states that this edition contains 105 illustrations in the text. The Khrestomatiia includes prose, fables and poetry by or associated with a number of important Russian literary figures, including Alexander Pushkin, Ivan Krylov, Mikhail Lermontov, Afanasy Fet, Alexey Koltsov, Ivan Nikitin, Vasily Zhukovsky and Sergey Aksakov, among others. Censorship approval dated St. Petersburg, 6 September 1886. Published in St. Petersburg, 1887. Bound in the original cloth-backed marbled boards. Particularly charming are the small colour-printed decorative pictures mounted to the inner board, adding considerable period character. Condition: A complete-appearing and internally quite well-preserved copy in a heavily used original binding. The original marbled boards and cloth spine show substantial rubbing, wear and loss of surface decoration, with worn edges and corners. Front hinge/fold is weak and cracked, although the text block itself remains surprisingly well held together. One leaf is loose; otherwise the text block remains cohesive. Pages show normal age toning and occasional minor handling marks, but no significant foxing and no scribbling or staining affecting the text. Numerous illustrations remain clean, sharp and highly attractive. Please refer to the photographs for the condition of the binding. Despite the worn exterior, this is an appealing surviving example of a 19th-century Russian educational book, retaining its original binding and extensive illustrated contents.
