The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. This book contains three accounts of Dutch voyages in search of a north-eastern passage to China, undertaken in the 1590s. The original Hakluyt edition was published in 1853, but a new edition was prepared in 1876, in light of recent expeditions to the region, of which accounts are given. The Dutch were not successful in establishing a north-east passage; but the stories of the expeditions and of the courage and endurance of the men who took part in them make for fascinating reading.

Led by Captain Allen Young in 1875 and again in 1876, the private expedition sought to gather information about the survivors and to conduct scientific research in the Arctic regions. The first voyage in 1875 specifically aimed to sail through Peel Sound to discover the fate of Sir John Franklin. The voyage in 1876 aimed to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound, although this was not achieved. The expeditions were partly funded to gather information and find traces that a previous official British expedition had missed.

A. de Bruijne captained the ship on her maiden voyage to Spitsbergen and Novaya Zemlya, accompanied by Koolemans Beynen who had gained Arctic experience with Sir Allen Young aboard the Pandora in 1875/6. The second work narrates the second voyage of the Willem Barents, on which Koolemans Beijnen did not participate.

Half title with heavy browning otherwise the text is very clean. Two folding maps. 16 illustrations. Overall a wonderful copy. This is the second edition after the first appeared in 1853, also done by the Hakluyt Society. The very extensive introductions provide valuable insight into the original text which is presented here as well. One of the scarcer Hakluyt Society publications that deal with 16th century Arctic Exploration.
