Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. This book contains three accounts of Dutch voyages in search of a north-eastern passage to China, undertaken in the 1590s. The original Hakluyt edition was published in 1853, but a new edition was prepared in 1876, in light of recent expeditions to the region, of which accounts are given. The Dutch were not successful in establishing a north-east passage; but the stories of the expeditions and of the courage and endurance of the men who took part in them make for fascinating reading.

(Bijbladen van het tijdschrift van het Aardrijkskundig Genootschap te Amsterdam, onder redactie van C.M.Kan & N.W.Posthumus, [Deel 2], No. 4). - Very good copy.Original first edition. - The author Laurens Reinhart Koolemans Beynen (11 March 1852 - 11 November 1879) was an officer in the Royal Netherlands Navy who participated in Arctic expeditions. - - The main objective of the voyages of the Pandora in 1875 and 1876 was to find traces of the missing Franklin expedition and navigate the Northwest Passage. Led by Captain Allen Young in 1875 and again in 1876, the private expedition sought to gather information about the survivors and to conduct scientific research in the Arctic regions. The first voyage in 1875 specifically aimed to sail through Peel Sound to discover the fate of Sir John Franklin. The voyage in 1876 aimed to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound, although this was not achieved. The expeditions were partly funded to gather information and find traces that a previous official British expedition had missed.

Koolemans Beynen, a Dutch adventurer, took part in the voyage of the Pandora. This scarce first Dutch edition tells the story of the ship's 1875 Arctic expedition, launched as a last attempt to uncover the lost written accounts of Franklin's ill-fated journey. The mission was partly financed by Lady Franklin herself, who sadly passed away just after Young and his crew set sail from Southampton. Beyond the search, the expedition also sought to push further north toward the magnetic pole in Baffin Bay and Lancaster Sound, while testing the possibility of navigating the elusive Northwest Passage.
