Poland was the only occupied land where aiding the Jews in any way was automatically punished by death. That over 100,000 Jews were saved in Poland, hidden by Polish families and Catholic convents and monasteries, is proof of great deeds of heroism by hundreds of thousands Poles. Over 3000 are known to have been executed for their actions on behalf of the Jews. This is also the tragic story of Polish Jewish relations after the Second World War as seen by someone who was a member of the post war parliament and a leader of the Polish Peasant Party, the largest party in opposition to the Communists. In 1947, facing imminent arrest, Korbonski and his wife Zofia fled to Sweden and then to the United States, where he has written a number of books, held various high level positions, including the chairman ship of the Assembly of Captive European Nations (ACEN), and where he continues to fight against the unfair and slanderous treatment of Poles as a nation of anti~Semites who stood by and did nothing to save the Jews. Stefan Korbonski shows that the Germans began to exterminate Poles immediately after their occupation in Poland began in September of 1939 (over 3,000,000 non~Jewish Poles perished in World War II). It was only in 1942, after the United States entered the war against Germany and the European Jews were no longer a useful hostage to keep America out of the war, that the systematic policy of total annihilation of European Jewry began. We now know that the Wannsee conference in January of 1942 launched this new policy known as "The Final Solution." Far from being idle bystanders in the Holocaust, the Poles were being decimated as part of the German plan to turn all Slavic nations into slaves of the Third Reich. It is ironic that the Poles who gave shelter to persecuted Jews for over seven centuries, inviting them to come to Poland when the rest of Europe was intent on banning them, should now be portrayed as indifferent to the fate of the Jews, if not actually hostile.
