Paperback. Condizione: New. The first English-language translation of Oiticica's "secret" poetry, featuring facsimile renderings of the handwritten poems and accompanying notes by the artistHélio Oiticica (1937-80) is widely considered one of Brazil's most significant artists, and his influence is felt across a range of disciplines including painting, film, installation and participatory art. He is well known as a key founder of the interdisciplinary movement known as Neoconcretismo, launched in Rio de Janeiro in 1959 with the collaboration of artists and writers including Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape and Ferreira Gullar. Between 1964 and 1966, moving out of his Neoconcretist period, Oiticica wrote a series of lyrical poems entitled "Poética Secreta" (Secret Poetics), and he reflected in a private notebook on their significance for his wider practice as an artist. Despite Oiticica's global fame, his "secret" poems are almost unknown and have never been published as a collection. This bilingual edition, with accompanying essays by translator Rebecca Kosick and critic Pedro Erber, uncovers the significance of poetry for Oititica's art and shows its importance to his thinking on participation, sensation and memory.…

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The innovative countercultural movement from one of the most notable twentieth-century presses. In this long-awaited book, Rebecca Kosick chronicles the rise, work, and legacy of the Alternative Press, a grassroots art and poetry publishing initiative founded in 1969 in Detroit, Michigan. Operated by Ken and Ann Mikolowski out of their home, the Alternative Press published original countercultural artwork and poetry by nationally renowned artists, including Alice Notley, Victor Hernandez Cruz, and Robert Creeley, and Detroit-based powerhouse artists, such as Jim Gustafson, Donna Brook, Ray Johnson, and John Sinclair. The postcards, bumper stickers, bookmarks, and broadsides produced by the Alternative Press circulated among poets, creatives, and subscribers across the United States. Kosick's research reanimates the Alternative Press's unconventional publications with more than one hundred full-color images, while illuminating the national impact their avant-garde interventions had at the intersection of politics, art, and life in the twentieth century. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Reconsiders the lyrical norm that predominates in Anglophone accounts of poetry through a multilingual and transnational lensA bold project that departs from a tradition heavily dominated by the lyric to question the very nature of what counts as poetry.A visually exciting text that draws on poetry and art from a wide array of late twentieth and early twenty-first century practitioners. An interdisciplinary approach to poetry and poetics that opens new avenues for understanding how poetry intersects with philosophies of the object, media theory, and visual studies.A transnational frame that responds to a growing scholarly push to situate American studies within the broader context of the American hemisphere. This book examines poets and artists in the Americas during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries to show how they worked to make language into material objects and material objects into language. It builds a theory of material poetics that provides an alternative account of poetry in hemispheric America. Rebecca Kosick argues that by reframing American poetry to prominently include object-oriented practices within and beyond the United States, material poetry can be seen as representing a significant branch of the American poetic tradition.
