Het boek plaatst zijn werk binnen de artistieke en culturele context van de 17de eeuw. Dit werk van Susan Koslow is een grondige kunsthistorische studie van Frans Snyders, een toonaangevende schilder uit de Vlaamse barok. Het boek analyseert zijn oeuvre, dat voornamelijk bestaat uit monumentale stillevens en dynamische dierstukken, en onderzoekt zijn innovatieve benadering van compositie, kleur en beweging. Koslow situeert Snyders binnen het netwerk van Antwerpse kunstenaars, waaronder zijn samenwerking met Peter Paul Rubens, en belicht zijn rol in de ontwikkeling van het barokke stilleven. Er wordt bijzondere aandacht besteed aan zijn technische vaardigheden en zijn vermogen om materiële rijkdom en levendige scènes weer te geven. De studie combineert stilistische analyse met historisch onderzoek en behandelt ook de iconografie en de symbolische betekenis van Snyders' werk. Door zijn internationale carrière en invloed wordt hij gepositioneerd als een sleutelfiguur binnen de Europese schilderkunst van de 17de eeuw.
