Er erforschte die Spektren der Röntgen- und Gammastrahlung und begründete 1928 die Theorie des Kristallwachstums. Er entdeckte 1935 den nach ihm benannten Kossel-Effekt, die Interferenzerscheinungen von monochromatischen Röntgenstrahlen, die von Atomen in einem Kristall ausgehen.
