T-lere are many ways to view a roomful of Lawrence Fane's sculptures: is a field of well-hewn implements with no apparent function; as a mind full of ripening kernels of thought; as a discarded group of cultural artifacts of indeterminate age and origin; or even as archeological objects of the future?like handmade R2D2s. While the sculptures may sometimes look almost familiar, we find it hard to place them, and yet they assume quizzical postures as if asking us to decifer them. Few artists expose their thought processes, intentionally or inadvertently, as clearly as Fane does. In fact, the act of thinking, more than anything, could be considered his subject. His wood sculptures express themselves with the directness of drawing. Ultimately, the product is the process, in terms of thought and material, so it follows that Fane would be more a modeler then a constructor and that he would shun fabricators. It's a writerly approach, in the way accidents of thought, inadvertent gestures, and the tricks of tools, such as the swirled 24 pages.…
