Im ersten…Teil des Buches gibt es eine theoretische Einleitung mit Uberlegungen zur Semantik der stehenden sowie der animierten Bilder. Hier geht der renommierte Autor, Professor fur Semiotik und visuelle Kommunikation, der spannenden Frage nach: Wie konnen die Bedeutungsfelder aller Piktogramme geordnet werden? Der zweite Teil prasentiert eine Sammlung von 1.200 Piktogrammen. Sie lassen sich nach Art eines Lexikons aus einem alphabetischen Index erschliessen. Alle Piktogramme sind als Vektorgrafiken dargestellt, der Anteil mit animierten Piktogrammen auf einer CD. Ausserdem gibt das eingelegte Plakat einen systematischen Uberblick uber die ,Welt der Zeichen". Die Mitherausgeber Michael Gotte und Michael Kneidl sind Professoren fur Gestaltung und mediale Kommunikation in Schwabisch Gmund und Dornbirn. Bearbeitet wurden die Piktogramme von Designer Jochen Speidel.
