Nach dem massiven Nein der Männer zum Frauenstimmrecht in der Schweiz am 1. Februar 1959 traten die Lehrerinnen des Basler Mädchengymnasiums geschlossen in den Streik, um gegen die Missachtung des staatsbürgerlichen Rechtsanspruchs der Schweizer Frauen zu protestieren. Diese Sensation wurde sogar von der New York Times vermeldet. Die Streikenden erhielten sowohl Schmähtiraden als auch Lob, Kuchen, Blumen und einen Spielzeug-Teppichklopfer. In den Basler Zeitungen entbrannten heftige Leserbriefschlachten, wobei die bürgerlichen Blätter unisono negativ und die linken Medien durchweg positiv reagierten. Der Verein für Frauenstimmrecht organisierte eine Sympathiekundgebung, während die meisten Basler Parlamentarier die Lehrerinnen scharf kritisierten; ihr stärkster Verteidiger war der Ehemann einer der Streikführerinnen. Diese Ereignisse fanden 14 Jahre nach dem Kriegsende und 12 Jahre vor dem Durchbruch des Frauenstimmrechts 1971 statt. Das Buch lässt Zeitzeuginnen aus dem Lager der Lehrerinnen und Schülerinnen zu Wort kommen und bietet historische Beiträge zur Stimmrechts-, Schul- und Frauengeschichte. Alte und neue Fotos sowie Dokumente und eine CD mit Radiobeiträgen gewähren aufschlussreiche Einblicke in diese bedeutende Episode, auf die Basel stolz sein kann.
