Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First editions. Two volumes bound in one. Text in German. Tall octavo. 470, 229. Heavily illustrated with diagrams and plates, several in color (including 13 color plate of dissected mice with printed acetate overlays). Ex-Philadelphia research institute library with their neat stamp on the front fly, but no other marks apparent. Bound into library buckram with spine gilt. Binding showing wear, worn through at the crown and spine ends, page edges a bit soiled and last few plates trimmed close at the foredge only affecting the imprint, a very good copy with the text bright and well-preserved. (N.B. One plate bound in the rear folds out at the foredge; the portion of the plate underneath is laid in. There is no evidence of the plate having split along that edge; whether it was issued as such or neatly separated during the rebind, we are unsure.) A heavily illustrated and extensive collection of papers on the relatively new field of chemotherapy; editor Paul Ehrlich, known as the father of immunology, received the Nobel Prize (with Ilia Metschnikow) in Physiology or Medicine in 1908. Several articles on the anti-syphilis drug Salvarsan are present, including the one paper Ehrlich contributed: "Über den jetzigen Stand der Salvarsantherapie mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Nebenwirkungen und deren Vermeidung" ("On the current status of Salvarsan therapy with special consideration of side effects and their prevention"). Very uncommon. *OCLC* locates seven copies of this two-volume Part I ("I. Teil: Originale"), three in the U.S. (Stanford, Penn, Michigan).
