Auch heute prägen Bilder, Stereotype und Generalisierungen die Denk- und Vorstellungsweisen über diese Beziehungen. Im vorliegenden Band hat Georg Kreis sieben Beispiele europäischer Ländernachbarschaft zusammengetragen. Dabei handelt es sich ausschliesslich um echte Nachbarschaften, also solche aneinander angrenzender Länder. Denn gerade hier bildet eine gemeinsam erlebte Vergangenheit die Folie, vor der sich die Beziehung in der Gegenwart abspielt: Geschichte hinterlässt positive und negative Potentiale, die in bestimmten Momenten aktiviert werden können. Obwohl sie dem aktuellen Wandel unterworfen sein müsste, ist die Beziehung zwischen zwei Ländern oft auf sonderbare Art konstant im Guten wie im Schlechten. Dies zeigt sich am Beispiel der Länderpaare Frankreich und Deutschland (seit 1957 EWG-Mitglieder) sowie Frankreich und Grossbritannien (letzteres 1973 der EG beigetreten). Drei Beiträge beziehen die Nicht-EU-Länder Schweiz und Türkei und das EWR-Land Norwegen ein. Überall zeigt sich, dass die alten historischen Beziehungen mindestens ebenso prägend sind wie der heute eingenommene Status, und dass sich die Nachbarschaftsbeziehungen damit auch vielfach über aktuelle politische Grenzziehungen hinwegsetzen. Der vorliegende Band beleuchtet diese Verschränkungen von Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, von Realität und Imagination in der Ländernachbarschaft anhand prägnanter Beispiele. Dabei berücksichtigen die Beiträge ein grosses Spektrum an Beziehungsspielarten: neben den 'grossen' politischen kommen auch die wirtschaftlichen, kulturellen, sportlichen, die offiziellen und die nichtoffiziellen zur Sprache.
