Bekannt ist, dass er eine eigene Pharmakopöe hatte, seine Medikamente teilweise von Apothekern herstellen ließ und einige Rezepte geheim hielt. Dennoch sind die Details zu seinen Heilmitteln, deren Zutaten, Kompositionen und Herstellungsvorschriften spärlich. 1847 wurden neun Rezepte veröffentlicht, die seither in zahlreichen Werken über Cagliostro zitiert werden. Diese Rezepte bieten jedoch nur einen begrenzten Einblick in seine Pharmakopöe, da sie lediglich Namen und Zutaten enthalten. Es gibt Hinweise, dass im Basler Staatsarchiv weitere cagliostrische Rezepte aufbewahrt werden. Das Ehepaar Sarasin-Battier, das eine umfangreiche pharmazeutische Rezeptsammlung anlegte, hat 53 Vorschriften, die eindeutig Cagliostro zugeordnet werden können. Diese Rezepte stehen im Mittelpunkt der Studie, die eine pharmaziehistorische Analyse durchführt. Zudem wird eine Edition von zwölf ausgewählten Rezepten präsentiert, die näher betrachtet werden.
