Evolving from her earlier figurative works, these abstract sand paintings evoke the traditions of landscape and naturalist painting. Accomplished by applying a thick layer of sand to the painted ground and then making precise marks while the sand is still wet, the paintings luminous qualities and their textured relief register and generate minute shifts in perception, creating their own sense of ambient light. These physical and tactile emanations are based on her observations of light in Los Angeles, where she lives and works, and where hazy skies caused by the atmospheric conditions of the West Coast, as well as the city s man-made pollution, make for extra-brilliant sunsets. The fourteen paintings in the exhibition also include Guidi s first triangular-shaped canvases, in a spectrum of colors, placing the organic accumulations of paint and sand within a sharp geometry.

Hardcover. A white casebound book. The title is in black lettering down the spine. Pages: (8), 9-301, (2). Profusely illustrated with a majority black-and-white images. "From 1969 until 2009, Max Protetch's gallery, first in Washington, DC, and then later in New York City was a vibrant gathering place for art, architecture, politics and ideas. Richly illustrated with previously unpublished materials from the gallery's archive, this volume provides insight into the early careers of some of contemporary art's most enduring figures. Protetch was an advocate for Minimalism and Conceptual and Pop art in the 1970s; architecture in the late '70s and 1980s; and beginning in the 1990s, a broad range of contemporary art, including from China. Protetch advocated for artists such as Vito Acconci, Jo Baer, Robert Barry, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, On Kawara, Robert Mangold, Sol LeWitt, Dan Graham and Lawrence Weiner; and architects such as Michael Graves, Tadao Ando, Peter Eisenmann, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, Samuel Mockbee, Aldo Rossi and Robert Venturi."
