Der vorliegende Band stellt die Ergebnisse der archäologischen, historischen, wirtschaftsgeschichtlichen und numismatischen Analysen vor, die von einem türkisch-österreichischen Forschungsteam erarbeitet wurden. Die große Menge osmanischer Münzen ermöglichte ein in dieser Feinheit bisher unbekanntes Verständnis des osmanischen Prägesystems im späten 16. und frühen 17. Jahrhundert. Auf dieser Grundlage wird der Quellenwert der Münze für die osmanische Wirtschafts- und Verwaltungsgeschichte revolutioniert. Auch für die numismatische Beschäftigung mit der Münzprägung des Osmanischen Reiches wird dieser Band richtungweisend sein. - The 2000 discovery of a treasure trove at Becin (by what today is Milas in southwest-Turkey) includes just under 50,000 Islamic and about 800 European coins in the greatest hoard that has ever been found in Turkey as part of regular archaeological excavation. It is at the same time also the largest Ottoman treasure of coins ever discovered. This volume presents the results of archaeological, historical, economic and numismatic analysis, which were developed by a Turkish and Austrian research team. The large number of Ottoman coins allows for an unprecedented understanding of the subtlety of Ottoman embossing in the late 16th and early 17th Centuries. On this basis the source value of the coin for Ottoman economic and administrative history will be revolutionized. Also, for the numismatic study of the Ottoman Empire's embossing of coins, this volume will be a pioneering work. German text. "It is generally accepted that debasement greatly contributed to the economic and conse-quently also social problems of the Ottoman Empire in the late 16th/early 17th century. The numismatic data derived from the Beçin coin hoard, closing under sultan Ahmed (1603-1617) greatly challenges this view. Metal analysis has shown that only the overall weights of the coins were reduced; the fineness of silver remained unchanged at least until the 1610s.". Die sieben unterschiedlich grossen Wohneinheiten, von denen jede zumindest uber ein Obergeschoss verfugte, liegen auf grosszugigen spathellenistische…n Terrassierungen sudlich der Kuretenstrasse und erschliessen sich uber schmale Stiegengassen, die dem stadtischen Strassenraster entsprechen.Die archaologischen Untersuchungen des Hanghauses 2 seit den 1960er Jahren haben zu einem differenzierten Bild von der Wohnkultur der ephesischen Eliten von der Errichtung in augusteisch-tiberischer Zeit bis zur Erdbebenzerstorung im 3. Viertel des 3. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. gefuhrt. Die aufwendige Konservierung der Ruinen unter einem modernen Schutzdach macht diese Ergebnisse auch fur den Besucher nachvollziehbar. Mit dieser Arbeit liegen nun nach dem Erscheinen der Wohneinheit 4 (2005) drei der sieben Wohneinheiten in einheitlicher Publikation vor, die Veroffentlichungen der weiteren Wohneinheiten schreiten zugig voran.Die hier behandelten Wohneinheiten 1 und 2 nehmen die oberste Terrasse des Hanghauses 2 ein. Wahrend die Erdgeschosse uber die steil ansteigenden Stiegengassen 1 und 3 erschlossen wurden, waren die Obergeschosse neben Innentreppen auch uber die im Suden entlang fuhrende sog. Hanghausstrasse zu betreten. In den Randzonen der Wohneinheiten lagen die Wirtschaftsbereiche, die hier eine direkte Anbindung an die Wasserversorgung und die Kanale besassen. Die Hauptraume offneten sich in zwei Stockwerken auf die Innenhofe, durch welche eine gute Belichtung und Beluftung garantiert war.Im Verlauf der ca. 250 Jahre dauernden Nutzung der Wohneinheiten 1 und 2 als Wohnquartiere der stadtischen Oberschicht, deren neu erarbeitetes chronologisches Gerust hier erstmals geschlossen dargestellt ist, kam es in den beiden Peristylhausern mehrfach zu Umbauten, die auf Besitz- und Funktionswechsel einzelner Raumgruppen hindeuten. Der Reichtum der Bewohner spiegelt sich in der mehrfach erneuerten prachtvollen Ausstattung der Reprasentationsraume im Erdgeschoss und Obergeschoss. Die qualitatvollen Wandmalereien, die zahlreichen Mosaikboden, die Glasmosaike in der Wohneinheit 2 und die kostbaren Marmor-Inkrustationen sind von besonderer Bedeutung fur die Kulturgeschichte des antiken Wohnbaus. Daruber hinaus blieben wesentliche Teile der beweglichen Ausstattung erhalten, so etwa Skulpturen, darunter die Elfenbeinfunde aus dem Raum SR 18 der Wohneinheit 2, Mobel, Kleinfunde sowie Tafelgeschirr aus Keramik und Glas, die hier im Kontext dargestellt werden. Einen tiefen Einblick ins Alltagsleben gewahren auch die auf sehr vielen Wandmalereien eingeritzten Graffiti, die etwa Haushaltsabrechnungen darstellen und im Falle der Wohneinheit 2 wahrscheinlich sogar den Besitzer uberliefern: C. Vibius Salutaris gehorte dem Ritterstand an und hatte es in Ephesos zu Einfluss und Reichtum gebracht. Bekannt ist vor allem die von ihm eingerichtete Stiftung, in der unter anderem auch bestimmt war, dass Silberstatuetten des Traian und seiner Frau Plotina in seinem Privathaus kultisch zu verehren seien. Er starb kinderlos, um die Hinterlassenschaft kummerten sich die in der Stiftungsinschrift genannten Erben. Die nur in geringem Masse festzustellenden Umbauten der Wohneinheit 2 sowie das jungste Inventar dieses Hauses sind wohl darauf zuruckzufuhren, dass die Erben das Haus weitgehend so belassen hatten, wie sie es von Vibius Salutaris ubernommen hatten.
