Sie tritt häufiger bei Frauen als bei Männern auf, und ihre Prävalenz nimmt mit dem Alter zu. Von den Patienten mit SCH haben 80 % einen Serum-TSH-Wert von weniger als 10 mIU/L. Die wichtigste Auswirkung der SCH ist die hohe Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass sie zu einer klinischen Hypothyreose und dann zu kardiovaskulären Erkrankungen führt. Sie wurde mit atherosklerotischen Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen in Verbindung gebracht, selbst wenn keine Hypercholesterinämie vorliegt. Die Entscheidung über die Behandlung von SCH-Patienten mit Levothyroxin zur Wiederherstellung der Euthyreose und zur Verbesserung des kardiovaskulären Risikos sollte vom Vorhandensein von Risikofaktoren und nicht von einem TSH-Grenzwert abhängen.
