Als konventionell aufgebaute Novelle verfügt die Erzählung über eine äußere Rahmenhandlung, in der ein erwachsener Mann sich an ein Erlebnis in seiner Knabenzeit erinnert (innere Rahmenhandlung). Er wird als Kind von seiner Mutter dafür bestraft, mit Füßen voller Wagenschmiere in die saubere Wohnung getreten zu sein. Die Tatsache, mit seiner 'teuersten Verwandten dieser Erde in dieses Zerwürfnis geraten' zu sein, zerbricht dem Jungen beinahe das Herz. Der Großvater nimmt sich daraufhin seiner an und zusammen gehen sie auf eine Wanderung, auf der er dem Jungen die Natur um sie herum erklärt und auch die Geschichte (hier: die Binnengeschichte) einer Pechbrenner-Familie während der Zeit der Pest erzählt.Im Folgenden soll genauer auf die erwähnte Wanderung des Großvaters und des Jungen eingegangen, und insbesondere Stifters Verhältnis zu Kultur und Natur untersucht werden.

Julius II, however, died shortly after the completion and so art historians believe that this usage dates back to post-Julian times and that the room was originally designed as library. On closer examination, this assumption is practically undeniable in regard to the overall unification of the room. The aim of this essay is to examine the main themes of the frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura and to explain how Raphael combines them into a unified cycle.

The aim of this essay is a detailed analysis of a sequence close to the end of the film. It consists of roughly five scenes: the first scene shows natives drumming in the jungle. In the next scene the spectator is transferred to the hallways of the Convent, where Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr) searches for Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron). The third scene shows the occurrences between those two in Sister Ruth's room and her final flight, the fourth is composed of the search of the nuns for Sister Ruth and the sequence has its climax when Sister Ruth visits Mr. Dean, confesses her love and in the end faints.Furthermore it will be examined, how the cinematic techniques underline the main themes and to what extent film language mediates a sense of foreboding to the spectator. As a whole, the film deals with the fall of the British Empire, here represented through the failing missionary work of the nuns. The chosen sequence itself, however, deals with the consequences of the tantalising setting on the Sisters and their repressed sexuality which takes overhand. Most striking is thereby the juxtaposition of Clodagh and Ruth, who are shown as mirror images. Whilst the one overcomes the temptation, the other one falls for it and - when repulsed by Mr. Dean - in the end loses control and becomes insane.

Every generation gets to know Frankenstein within a new historical and social context. So it has to be said that the reception of Shelley's masterpiece changed over the years. The creature of Victor Frankenstein became the archetype of a monster, a model for many specters that followed. Mary Shelley was born on 30 August 1797 and died on 1 February 1851 at the age of 53. She was the daughter of the philosopher William Godwin and his wife Mary Wollstonecraft, who was known as a philosopher and feminist. Both her parents had talents in writing and this talent should be inherited to their daughter as well. In 1816 she married her lover, the famous poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.In the summer of 1816 the famous couple went on a journey to Switzerland, accompanied by Mary's stepsister Claire, who arranged for them a meeting with her lover Lord Byron. During their stay at the Villa Diodati in Geneva the group talked about science and inspired by some German ghost tales decided to have a ghost-story contest, which led to the initial draft of Frankenstein. Mary Shelley's tale is the only one of those stories which has been completed. The first edition of Frankenstein was released in 1818, another one in 1831, changed and corrected by Mary Shelley herself.The romantic period was among other things also the time of an enormous paradigm shift in science. The Frankenstein novel has this shift as a basis and combines scientific horror with elements of traditional Gothic fiction. The turn of the century also brought a growing interest in landscape and nature. In 1757 the Irish philosopher Edmund Burke released 'A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful', which became the most important treatise on the concept of the sublime. This seminar paper shall examine the way in which Mary Shelley creates an atmosphere of terror in her novel. Therefore both the preface of the 1818 version of Frankenstein, written by Percy B. Shelley, as well as the 1831 introduction by Mary Shelley shall be analyzed on the author's original intention and the idea behind Frankenstein. Then a definition of the term 'terror' will be given, followed by a chapter on the concept of the sublime as seen by Edmund Burke and Ann Radcliffe. The last chapter examines 'terror' within the story itself, as well as the terror achieved through other features, for example the sublime.

Jahrhunderts und setzte mit seinen Werken moderne Maßstäbe für die gesamte europäische Kunstwelt. Sein Gesamtwerk reicht von der Hofmalerei bis hin zu privat angefertigten Aquatinta-Radierungen, die von hoher Qualität zeugen und das Kunstpublikum bis in das heutige Jahrhundert faszinieren und beschäftigen.In seiner Zeit am spanischen Hof ab 1786 fertigte Goya zahlreiche Porträts adeliger Auftragsgeber an. Von der Porträtmalerei allerdings entfernt er sich in seinen sogenannten Caprichos (span. Launen ): die dargestellten Figuren sind Archetypen, die auf die gesamte Gesellschaft bezogen werden können. Diese wirken ebenso wie die dargestellten Situationen nur auf den ersten Blick normal und alltäglich . Goya kratzt mit seinen satirischen Motiven unter der Oberfläche des Menschen und zeigt verborgene Laster. Goya bewirbt seine Caprichos am 6. Februar 1799 mit einer Zeitungsannonce. Die Zielsetzung der Caprichos ist didaktischer und moralisierender Natur. Der Künstler erläuterte, daß er sich die Aufgabe gestellt habe, aus der Masse der in jeder bürgerlichen Gesellschaft verbreiteten Torheiten und Fehler, aus den durch Brauchtum, Unwissenheit oder Eigennutz gutgeheißenen Vorurteilen und Lügen jene auszuwählen, die sich am ehesten bloßstellen ließen und der schöpferischen Phantasie des Künstlers den weitesten Raum boten. Er wolle unsere Augen öffnen und unsere Entrüstung wecken. Die Absicht der Platten stimmt daher vollkommen mit den Zielen der Aufklärung überein, das Böse durch Belehrung und Erziehung auszurotten. Ziel der Arbeit soll es sein, anhand von Capricho 2 ( El si pronuncian y la mano alargan Al primero que llega ) und Capricho 6 ( Nadie se conosce ) aufzuzeigen, wie Goya mit der Wahrnehmung des Betrachters spielt und diesen gezielt in seine Werke einarbeitet. Desweiteren soll beleuchtet werden, wie er auf die Vorstellungen, die jeder Betrachter mit sich bringt, in seinen Bilder reagiert. Die zu untersuchenden Caprichos stehen ganz am Anfang des Zyklus, welcher insgesamt 80 Aquatinta-Radierungen umfasst. Nevertheless he had a great influence on American literature and the modern short story.The attention of this essay will be focused on Poe's means and methods of manipulating the reader with the effect of horror and fear. This shall be demonstrated on the example of 'The Fall of the House of Usher'. The story was written in spring or summer of 1839 in Philadelphia. It was published in September of that year in Burton's Gentleman's Magazine, of which Poe was assistant editor. A collection of 25 stories named 'Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque', including Usher, came out in December. Thomas Woodson describes Usher as 'Succession of futile efforts to establish himself, to define a solid identity for posterity, for his contemporaries, and for himself. It is of course typical for him that he should try to construct his own literary personality by dramatizing the fall of a house and of a family.'.

Hier wurde in der kleinen Stadt Sansepolcro Piero della Francesca (c. 1412-1495) geboren, der bis heute als einer der mysteriösesten Künstler des Quattrocento gilt. Dennoch strömen jährlich Tausende von Kunstfreunden in die südliche Toskana um dort auf dem sogenannten Piero della Francesca Trail zu wandeln, auf dem sie die schönsten Werke des Malers der Frührenaissance bestaunen können. Das war nicht immer so. Lange war Piero eher für seine Wissenschaft als für seine Malerei bekannt, erst im 19. Jahrhundert erwachte nach und nach das Interesse der Kunstgeschichte an dem Künstler und seiner rational-geometrischen Kunst, die bis dato wenig Anklang gefunden hatte.Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Beziehung von Piero zu seiner Heimatstadt Sansepolcro. Eine Interpretation von Pieros Werk mit lokalem Bezug ist ein relativ junger Ansatz, der erst durch die Erkenntnisse des Historikers James R. Banker vorangetrieben wurde, der lange Zeit in Sansepolcro verbrachte und mit sozialhistorischem Ansatz die 'important features of the culture of San Sepolcro and [.] those most formative in the life of Piero della Francesca' erforschte. Eine Ausstellung in der New Yorker Frick Collection aus diesem Jahr ist die erste, die sich Piero della Francesca 'in patria' verschrieben hat. The aim of this essay is a detailed analysis of a sequence close to the end of the film. It consists of roughly five scenes: the first scene shows natives drumming in the jungle. In the next scene the spectator is transferred to the hallways of the Convent, where Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr) searches for Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron). The third scene shows the occurrences between those two in Sister Ruth's room and her final flight, the fourth is composed of the search of the nuns for Sister Ruth and the sequence has its climax when Sister Ruth visits Mr. Dean, confesses her love and in the end faints.Furthermore it will be examined, how the cinematic techniques underline the main themes and to what extent film language mediates a sense of foreboding to the spectator. As a whole, the film deals with the fall of the British Empire, here represented through the failing missionary work of the nuns. The chosen sequence itself, however, deals with the consequences of the tantalising setting on the Sisters and their repressed sexuality which takes overhand. Most striking is thereby the juxtaposition of Clodagh and Ruth, who are shown as mirror images. Whilst the one overcomes the temptation, the other one falls for it and - when repulsed by Mr. Dean - in the end loses control and becomes insane. 16 pp. Englisch.
