Umschlag Im Grundsatz ging es Kuckuck um eine Frage, die seit dem Altertum die philosophischen Welterklärer aller Epochen umtrieb: wie entsteht Leben. So war sich zum Beispiel Aristoteles sicher, daß die höheren' Lebewesen seit Ewigkeit die Erde als Ergebnis ges…chlechtlicher Fortpflanzung bevölkerten. Daneben rechnete er aber auch mit Leben als Ergebnis von Spotanerzeugung'. Seine Botschaft: bestimmte Arten von niederen' Lebwesen entstanden spontan im Wasser oder in der Erde unter dem Einfluß von Wärme, Luft und Feuchtigkeit als Produkte von Fäulnis und Verwesung. Und er zählt Beispiele auf: Muscheln, Quallen, Schnecken, Krebse, Würmer, Insekten. Seine Erklärung: sie sind einer Kochung' (pépsis) ausgesetzt. Sein Befund: wenn flüssige Materie erhitzt und ihr damit das Lebensprinzip Wärme zugeführt wird, hat sie die Fähigkeit, selbst Leben hervorzubringen. Das Abendland schloß sich bis weit in die Neuzeit dieser aristotelischen Lagebeschreibung an. Ein Konsens, den u. a. die römisch christianisierten Konfessionspfleger nur zum Teil zwanglos beglaubigten. Da war zunächst ihr Widerspruch. Sie wollten mit dem Aristotelischen Ewigkeitsbescheid nicht leben, weil ihnen nur ein ewiger Schöpfer mit einer creatio ex nihilo' und seiner bedrohlichen Entscheidungsgewalt über Anfang und Ende seiner Welt die Munitionierung ihrer Verhaltensgebote ermöglichte. Aber ansonsten war man sich einig und hatte dafür notwendige Verkündungsanker: die katholischen Glaubenskompositeure hatten mit ihrer Übernahme der jüdischen Genesis' die himmlisch ispirierten Sätze "das Wasser bringe lebendige Wesen hervor." und "die Erde bringe Lebendige Wesen hervor" Sätze, die weit vor Aristoteles im babylonischen Asyl den Glauben jüdischer Exilanten bestimmten. (Gen. 1, 20) Und die Glaubensarrangeure der jungen christlichen Kirche übernahmen dieses Schöpfungsprotokoll in älterer (aus: Jahwistischer Quelle, 950 - 850 v.Ch., Genesis 2) und neuerer (als priesterschaftlichen' Bericht, 550 - 500 v.Ch., Genesis 1) Version in ihren Gewißheitskanon. Ihre Deutung: Gott entdeckte am fünften und sechsten Schöpfungstag die Möglichkeit der Co-Kreativität. Die von ihm erschaffene Erde und das von ihm erschaffene Wasser wurden durch sein Wort zu Schöpfungsassistenten. Sein Kommando: "Es wimmle das Wasser von schwärmenden lebendigen Wesen, und Vögel sollen über der Erde fliegen angesichts der Wölbung des Himmels!" Am Rande. Ein wesentliches Narrativ der theologischen Selbstbeherrschungsschulung - die Geschichte vom weltflutenden Zorn Gottes und der Rettungsaktion Noahs - war zweifelnden Zahlenliebhabern auf diese Weise zu erklären: Noah sammelte nur die von Gott geschaffenen Wesen, der Rest reproduzierte sich durch Generatio spontanea selbst (Spontanzeugung oder Urzeugung). Mit dem Weg in die Neuzeit änderte sich der Umgang der theologisch und dabei naturwissenschaftlich forschenden Wahrheitssucher mit der Welt und ihren Dingen. Man wurde experimentell. Auch in der Frage der göttlichen Entdeckung der Schöpfungskraft seines Geschaffenen. In diesem Sinne prüfte u, a, der katholische Priester und Naturforscher John Turberville Needham (1713-1781) den Glauben an die Co-Kreatität der Materie: mit gekochten Fleisch und Pflanzenextrakten ("infusionen"). Seine Annahme: Hitze tötet alle Keime, daher müssten Mikroorganismen, die später erscheinen, neu entstanden sein. Seine Überzeugung: diese "Infusionen" enthalten "aktive organische Partikel", die sich selbst organisieren. Die Natur besitzt damit eine innewohnende Lebenskraft, die Materie ist belebt. Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon (1707-1788) kannte Needham und dachte in dessen Sinne. Er ging experimentell einen anderen Weg: er führte im Mikroskop Untersuchungen mit Fleischbrühen durch und war dabei überzeugt, dass organische Materie nach dem Tod in winzige "lebendige Moleküle" zerfällt, die sich dann spontan zu neuen Kleinstlebewesen (Mikroben) zusammenschließen. Lazzaro Spallanzani (1729-1799), Jesuit und Naturforscher, enttarnte die Ergebnisse als Folgen einer unbedachten Versuchsanordnung: er kochte die Infusionen eine volle Stunde lang, um wirklich jeden Keim abzutöten, verwendete keine Korken, sondern schmolz die Glashälse über einer Flamme zu. Die Gefäße waren dadurch absolut hermetisch und molekulardicht verschlossen. Das Ergebnis: Seine Brühen blieben über Wochen und Monate glasklar. Es gab kein Wimmeln, keine Spontanexistenz. Seine Schlußfolgerungen sammelte er in einem Aufsatz über mikroskopische Beobachtungen bezüglich des Schöpfungssystems der Herren Needham und Buffon' (1765). Spallanzani entwickelte dort seine Luftkeim-Theorie: die Kleinstlebewesen wimmeln' nicht aus der toten Materie, sondern es schweben in der Luft unsichtbare, winzige "volanti ovetti" (fliegende Eierchen). Needham und Buffon wehrten sich. Ihr Vowurf: durch das lange Kochen habe Spallanzani die "Lebenskraft" aus der Luft gefoltert und zerstört. Dies blieb in Sachen Urzeugung die Frontlinie der wissenschaftlichen Debatte. Und dann kam 1859 Louis Pasteur, ein Kenner der Spallanzani-Kritik. Pasteur modifizierte die Versuchsgerätschaft des Jesuiten: er sorgte mit Schwanenhalskolben für die Sicherung der Sterilität der Nährlösung, freien Lufteintritt und die Verhinderung von Keimeinträgen. Er nahm eine klare, proteinreiche Brühe, sorgte durch Erhitzung für deren Kochen und den Luftabzug durch den Schwanenhals - damit war der Innenraum steril. Im Folgenden blieb der Luftkontakt bestehen, der Schwanenhals verhinderte den Eintrag von Keimen, Staubpartkel blieben im Hals hängen. Die Beobachtung über Wochen: es gab keine Trübung, Keine Mikroorganismen, kein Geruch, keine Gärung. Das Fazit Pasteurs: Keime kommen aus Keimen, nicht aus Materie, sterile Nährlösung bleibt steril, wenn kein Keimeintrag erfolgt, Luft allein erzeugt kein Leben, nur die darin enthaltenen Mikroorganismen. Und damit: spontane Generation existiert nicht. Pasteurs Befunde sorgten naturwissenschaftlich für eine kopernikanisc.
