Este libro da a conocer las últimas investigaciones de la autora sobre el retrato en España de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, partiendo de Alonso Sánchez Coello, pintor de cámara de Felipe II, el más conocido y considerado autor por antonomasia del retrato cortesano español del siglo XVI, y de Sofonisba Anguissola, la dama pintora de Isabel de Valois, olvidada en España y tan interesante como Sánchez Coello. Hay un tercer artista de la corte casi desconocido, Jorge de la Rúa Jooris van dr Straaten o Maestre George, flamenco y colega de Sánchez Coello en Portugal y después en España. Como señalan los documentos, pintó más para la Reina Isabel de Valois que Sánchez Coello y Sofonisba juntos. Se enlaza la vida y la obra respectiva de cada artista, respetando así su evolución, enfocando sus obras en el momento en que son creadas y refiriendo al mismo tiempo los datos técnicos propios de un catálogo. En la obra de cada artista la autora se ha concentrado en el retrato, poniendo mayor afán en separar las manos de los diferentes pintores, rectificando multitud de atribuciones, ampliando o recortando sus obras. También ha puesto especial atención en la identificación correcta de los personajes retratados. Se agregan unas hojas sinópticas con los principales personajes retratados, otras hojas sinópticas por pintores, ordenadas cronológicamente.
